They are checking out Escalante's new fire engine, one of several new units in county received in recent weeks. Escalante Boasts New Firefighting Equipment : ESCALANTE - Escalante's volunteer firefighters have been learning the details of handling the city's new fire engine, a not uncomplicated, un-complicated, expensive piece of machinery. The city recently took delivery of the new engine at a total cost of $105,000, with another $18,000 in equipment. The glossy white fire engine, a four-door International, was built at Ocala, Fla. It boasts a 1,000 gallon-per-minute pump, 1,000-gallon booster tank, an 8,000-lb. winch, has 800 feet of three-inch hose, 500 feet of two-and one-half inch hose, 400 feet of one-and one-half-inch preconnects, 200 feet of two-and-one-half inch preconnects, ad two self-contained breathing units. The unit also has small foam capabilities, said Chief Harris, for fighting gasoline and oil fires. The fire department will also function as a fire rescue unit, responding re-sponding to all ambulance calls with certified Emergency Medical Technicians. Escalante's department benefitted, benefit-ted, like others in the county, when the county received $400,000 in Community Impact Board grant monies and the county donated another an-other $200,000 to purchase fire engines for several communities in the county. The department's 12 volunteers, headed by Chief Ron Harris, have participated in the State Fire Marshal's Mar-shal's fire investigation class, a Utah Valley Community College class in basic firefighting taught by Coy Porter, and a tactical operations opera-tions class offered by the National Fire Academy. Deputy chief is Augie Bernardo, assistant chief is Eric Woolsey, captain is Brent Spencer, lieutenant is Chris Christensen and the balance of the crew includes Shane Steed, Troy Olsen, Richard Lyman, Vern Mclnelly, Doug Dupras, Jim Bowman and Rod Allred. |
