Show bulletin on nematode field studies issued the utah agricultural experiment station has just issued a bulletin entitled field studies of 0 sugar beet nematode this bulletin lias has been written by george stewart agronomist ot of the station and A H bareman graduate student in the department of 0 agronomy much of the data of the survey have been secured from the sugar company A complete survey of 0 the nematode in the sugar beet growing districts has been given except for crop rotations all common agronomic gnomic practices that normally increase yields were found ol of no avail one year of other crops between two beet crops on heavily infested Is land nd was of no measurable benefit two years of other crops gave some increase in yield three years conf con sid erable and tour four years almost entirely restored the yields beets can be grown with safety only one year at a time after tour four years of other crops on heavily infested land about 20 per cent ol of heavily infested land can be grown bucce successfully in beets the following rotation is recommended iii alfalfa 3 to 5 years silage corn or potatoes 1 year sugar beets with manure 1 year small grain I 1 year potatoes with manure or corn 1 year and grain with alfalfa seeded in the spring with the grain or in midsummer after the grain is removed I 1 year the secret is to have tour four years of other crops and then one year of beets since dirt from beet dumps is the most common source of new infestation it should not be returned to farming and or dumped on roads whence wheels and brake blocks may carry it to the fields copies of this publication bulletin may be obtained without charge y addressing publications division experiment station logan utah |
