Each took 1st in their weight division at the State 1A Wrestling Tournament Friday in Milford and Sanders was selected Most Valuable Player in 1A in the entire state and also at region. PHS Claims Top Two IA State Wrestling Champs PANGUITCH Two Panguitch Pangui-tch High School wrestlers, both of whom ended the season at 34-0, captured top honors at the 1 A State Wrestling Tournament at Milford Feb. 10. Bobcat Travis Sanders, a senior, at 140 pounds, also took home the title of Most Valuable Player in State 1A competition. Sanders had previously been named MVP at Region 1A competition. Sanders took first place in his weight division divi-sion at state by pinning last year's reigning state champion at the 140-pound 140-pound weight level, Mike Porter from East Carbon. Sanders actually pinned all three of his opponents at state competition. Kip Davis, also a senior at PHS, took first place in his 145-pound weight division, beating George Chappcll of Wayne, 4-0. Stoncy Burningham took 4th at state in his 160-pound division, with most of the rest of the team winning at least one of their individual indi-vidual matches. As teams, Allamont took first place, Wayne second and Piute third. Coaches Frank Houston and David Weekes are enthusiastic about their team's performance for the season. They foresee a positive future for wrestling at PHS with upcoming potential. The coaches agreed that family 'support for the wrestlers and the ! support from other fans had contributed con-tributed to the team's success both at home and away. They also had praise for those who helped to make the Annual Panguitch Wrestling Tournament Invitational a rousing success. |
