The parking lot is needed primarily pri-marily during the winter months when parking along Utah Highway 14 is not only dangerous, but prohibited. pro-hibited. Last year when representatives of the Dixie National Forest and Kaibab Forest Products met with owners on Cedar Mountain to discuss dis-cuss timber harvesting- practices, some of the homeowners mentioned men-tioned they were in need of some- where to park during the winter months. During a break, several people put their heads together and the project was born. Many of the homeowners visit their property during the winter when the roads are not plowed into the subdivisions. They bring snowmobiles and need a place to park their vehicles and trailers. Parking is not allowed on the highway. Kaibab Forest Products offered to bring in heavy machinery and level out the parking area. The Forest Service offered to haul cin- near Duck C Area is popular for recreationists and will provide area to put vehicles. dcrs to the lot, and the homeowners agreed to do the final spreading and crushing of the cinders. Last fall Kaibab did the leveling off of the parking area which is located lo-cated immediately off Utah Highway High-way 14 at the Strawberry Creek road. Just before the Forest Service was scheduled to haul cinders to the lot, it snowed. The project was then delayed until this summer. Even though the surfacing was not completed, the lot was used during the winter and has been used this summer. "We all realized the need for a parking area during the winter," said Ron Wilson, District Ranger for the Cedar City District, "but we had no idea the area would be used so heavily during the summer, too." "This is a project which brought together different groups," said Wilson. "Lately there has been a fair mount of controversy over the harvesting of timber on the mountain moun-tain and this parking lot is proof that the same group of people can work together. We all realize that we are neighbors and that the best way to get along is to work together." |
