When the work is Dam Nears Completion, Fishing Will Begin Soon At Pine Lake "Tell the regular fishermen of Pine Lake that their favorite fishing spot will soon be fishable," said Gene Shaweroff, hydrologist with the Utah Water Resources Division and project engineer of the Pine Lake reclamation project The lake had developed cracks in its earthen dam and needed to be reworked to save the structure. It has been unusable since the fall of 1987. Shaweroff said the work on the $20,000 project would be finished in mid-September and the lake will begin to receive water then. completed in the near future, fishermen will again be able to fish on the lake without construction interference. Norm McKee Panguitch Conservation Con-servation Officer said his department depart-ment would stock the lake with cutthroat trout fingerlings as soon as the right water level was reached and catchables would be released in the spring of 1989. Pine Lake has long been a prime fishing spot as much for its beauty as for the great fishing. It also has a Forest Service campground site nearby. Shane Carling of the Carling Construction Company, Fillmore is in charge of the work at the dam. The company has installed a three-foot three-foot diameter, 110-foot steel pipe through the northwest end of the dam that is encased in concrete. The concrete is eight inches thick on the sides and bottom with a 16-inch layer on top. A concrete-encased valve will allow a controllable amount of water wa-ter to be released from the bottom flow pipe as well as water going over a spillway on the other end of the dam. McKee says this is being done to prevent some of the water stagnation that took place before. The lake depth at the bottom outlet will be approximately 25-fcet 25-fcet and should make for good fishing fish-ing there. Some of the lake bottom will be resculptured and a boat ramp will be built several hundred yards around the bend of the dam towards the campground. Some unaware of the dam reworking, re-working, have been disappointed when they drive to the lake and discovered it empty. An important response for the rehabilitation work is to eliminate a swamp of water that existed between be-tween the north side of the lake and the campground where the water killed a great number of trees. |
