Show By Harriet Priska 826-4810 Summer came the last day in May! What a relief to be warmer at last. We had about an inch of rain and in some cases hail toward the end of the month and we were "thinken" that June would never come. Memorial Day weekend was wet and cool but this did not dampen the spirits of some 188 participants of the first "Run to the Ruins" by the Harley Davidson Club from Salt Lake City. Already plans are in the works for next year's event. They enjoyed the area and all the friendly people. They extended thanks to all who put on the dance and breakfast. Both were a great success. High school graduation was a big event for twelve students, ten of whom are going to college. Among them was Katie Munson who enjoyed the support of a large family. Coming from Moscow, Ida. were Russell and DeEtte Barney; Kay Munson from Post Falls, Ida.; Kim Botkin, Julie Zurcher, Mark Munson and Darin and Angie Munson all from Boise, Ida. The rafters were ringing with the voices of ten grandchildren too at Bob and Mavises new home, but what fun to have so many of their children home at the same time. Katie will be starting school at Stephens Henager Business School in Provo, Aug. 1. The town was also ringing with 273 voices of the Porter family. Ben Porter reports that his sister was here from Bountiful, Nita and husband Richard Sharp. Howard and Lena Alvey from Salt Lake City; Kline and Lynn Barney of Provo; Joe and Kay Cannon from Orem (he owns Geneva Steel); Vernon Porter, Mt. Pleasant and Owen and Leola Porter from Lehi, to name a few. They all enjoyed a luncheon and slide program about life in Escalante from 1920 to 1940. (See Escalante News Page 4 A) Escalante News From Page 2A Also here for the Porter reunion were Ed and Phyllis Jarrett from Kingston with their son Allen and Val Jarrett from Salt Lake City. Marlene Haws drove a busload of ladies to Orderville for their annual D.U.P. (Daughters Of The Utah Pioneers) Convention. Velma Boulter, Fay Alvey, Elda Haws, LoReta Spencer, LaRue Spencer, Florence Alvey, Lana Chistian, and Sheila Wooley went from Escalante; La Vera Moss and Erma Clark from Cannonville; and Margaret Mecham from Tropic. Lane and Geraldine Liston just returned from St. Johns, Ariz, where they went to attend the 8th grade graduation exercises of granddaughter Emilee, daughter of Gary Lane Liston. Melvin and Florence Alvey made a trip to Richfield to attend the high school graduation of their grandson, son of Rick and Helen Pruitt. He had the honor of being valedictorian. Doyle Cottam took his wife Thelma to her doctor in St. George for her check-up. The doctors were amazed at the progress she is making since suffering a stroke in December. Doyle must be a good nurse! Visiting at the home of Betty P. Alvey were son Sam and family and daugher Christine Morrill and family of Richfield. Raymond and Marsha Griffin came from Richfield also to help parents Vernon and Hazel remodel Hazel's kitchen. Marlene Haws attended the Postmaster convention in Richfield. While there she met with old classmates of the Escalante schools Shirlene Spencer Roberts of Ruidoso Downs, N.M. and Connie Jepsen of Boulder for lunch and a good old gab session. Shirlene is the postmaster in Ruidoso Downs and Connie and husband Alfred have moved from Newark, Calif, to their retirement home in Boulder. Twin sons of Cynthia Baker, Bruce and Brian were in a car wreck and hospitalized in Kingman, Ariz. Both boys are home in good spirits and trying to heal. Betty R. Alvey spent a week in May in Salt Lake City with her two daughters, Linda Stoke and Irene Tate. They attended two dance recitals in which Linda's daughters, Jill and Jenny performed. They also saw Irene's son, Jody receive . his eagle scout award and attended a . jazz concert with son Kerry in the band. Then Jay and Linda Stokes came down to be with Betty over the Memorial Day weekend. The Bill Griffin home was also ringing with the voices of 23 grandchildren, accompanied by their parents, Boyd and Trudy Griffin, Cleveland; Evan and Kicki Excell, North Ogden; Brian and Sue Lynn Griffin, Richfield and Doug Jeannette Braithewait, Sunset. Thais Griffin journeyed to Salt Lake City with sister Ardis Davis for five days at the end of May, where she had her one year checkup. The doctor said she is doing better than expected. Then she and Gene enjoyed visits from son Mark Griffin, St. George and daughter Melanie Griffin, Las Vegas, Nev., over Memorial weekend. Brane and Kathy Griffin took care of her sister's three children, while they moved from Delta to Monroe. Then Gary and Kellie Winegar came down to pick up the kids over the Memorial Day weekend. week-end. Nellie Bailey's home looked like "trailer city"! Her daughter Martha Rae and Calvin Schow brought a whole entourage with them for the weekend. Included in this group were former residents Dana Lay, Charles Wilson of Salt Lake City; Dale Reynolds of Orem, and Glade Reynolds of Richfield. Two-hundred-seventy-four uncles, un-cles, aunts, and cousins were in attendance at the Jared R. Porter reunion. The families of Roland Porter, Edith Barney, Leland Porter, Adelia Roundy, Hyrum Porter, Inez Shurtz, and uncle Emmett and aunt Al Porter were represented. The only family not in attendance was that of "Jode" Porter. Visiting at the home of Elda Haws from Salt Lake City was her brother Elvin and Hilda Barker, nephew Lynn Barker and sister Elsie Fitts. The family of Calvin and Loretta Shurtz all made their yearly visit; Gordon from Las Vegas; Don from Huntington; Ivan from Cedar City; and Dorothy Cowles and Virginia from Richfield. We noticed the Bill Griffin's had Niki Excells family from Ogden, Boyd Griffin's family from Cleveland; and of course, Boyd's band played for the dance on Saturday night. Danny and Lois Spencer had Ivan and Lucille Davenport of Salt Lake City. Jim and Janet Spencer visited the Claron Griffin's as did Ken and Roma Clark. Roma got a call in the middle of the night to come back to Salt Lake City to be the recipient of a liver transplant. She came through the operation well and is recovering nicely. |
