Show l Job Status Shows Increase In Garfield Garfield County, except for i construction, experienced growth in every job sector during the third i quarter of 1988 over the same pc-f pc-f riod in 1987 according to statistics released by the Utah Department of ; : Employment Security for the fivc-; fivc-; county area of Garfield, Kane, Iron, ; Beaver and Washington counties. The jobless rate in the south-' south-' western district composed of those ', five counties dropped from 5.8 percent per-cent in third quarter 1987 to 4.2 percent in the same period of 1988. 5 Non-farm jobs increased by 675 over third quarter 1987 with trade ' and services creating the most new jobs. Building construction valuation grew to $18.9 million in third quarter 1988 from $13.6 million in third quarter 1987 generally in the district. In Garfield County, however, how-ever, construction valuation fell by over 67 percent from a year ago. With only one-half the number of new homes as last year, and 82.2 percent less new non-residential construction, total valuation fell to $359,000, from $1.1 million a year ago. New residential construction consisted only of four new homes located in Boulder (1), Escalante (1), and the unicorporated areas of the county (2). Tourist room collections in the five-county area increased by 20.5 percent to stand at $9.1 million, only the second lime in the past 10 years that collections were more than $9 million in any given quarter. quar-ter. Garfield County motels were full and restaurants flourished during the past tourist season with one major motel reporting bookings through 1990.
