The event, which was sponsored by the Utah Parks and Recration Association, was given recognition by Governor Scott Matheson. In a dual resolution Matheson declared June as Parks and Recreation Month in Utah and Saturday, June 9 as Utah Express "Life. Be In It," Relay Day. The relays began in Logan, the Four Corners border area and in St. George with batons carried by participants moving along the designated pathways in a variety of ways. They ran, used wheelchairs, roller skates, bicycles, skate boards, stage coaches or traveled via any method they chose to take part. Steve Marshall, pharmacist and president of the Panguitch City Chamber of Commerce, was local coordinator of the event and took the first leg of the relay in the Panguitch area. Marshall received the baton from Norm Forbush who had traveled from the Cedar City area to Panguitch Lake. Marshall biked the 17 miles from Panguitch Lake to Panguitch where he was met by his children who took turns in getting the baton to the Panguitch Clinic where it was received by Dr. Tom Marshall. Dr. Marshall ran the baton from the clinic to the hospital where it was received by his son, Tim, 9, who ran the baton to his cousin, Mary Ann Pearson, 11, for a short run. It was then taken over by the children of Dan Marshall; Monte, 10, who ran the baton for four miles on the River Lane Road before giving it to his brother, Mike, 6, who ran it for a short distance. At Bear Valley Junction, the Marshall family passed off the baton to runner Dave Southard who ran for seven miles before turning it over to Dan Marshall. The baton was relayed all the way to Parks and Recreation personnel at Kingston who continued the relay towards Salt Lake City for Saturday's festivities which will begin at 6 p.m. at Liberty Park. Both Governor Matheson and Salt Lake City Mayor Ted Wilson have been invited to carry the batons on their final leg into Liberty Park.
