Show Escalante Student Is Top SUSC Bullrider CEDAR City Southern Utah State College freshman Claude Lyman won top honors in bull riding this weekend in National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association competition held at Utah Technical College, Provo. Lyman, a 1982 Escalante High School 1 graduate from Boulder, Garfield County finished in first place ahead of contestants from nine other Rocky Mountain Region schools. The SUSC freshman is a veteran bull rider, a winner in Utah high school rodeo competition who qualified for the National High School Rodeo Finals last year. Lyman and four other students, three of them freshman, represented SUSC at the NIRA rodeo against contestants from Boise State University, Idaho State University, College of Southern Idaho, Utah State University, Weber State College, Snow College, University of Utah, and Utah Technical Colleges, Provo and Salt Lake." Melanie JaramiuV,' a-; sophomore transfer from the College of Eastern Utah, finished third in the first go-round in barrel racing. She tipped a barrel and was disqualified in the final round. The Carbon High School graduate has competed in the Rocky Mountain Rodeo Association, qualifying for the RMRA barrel racing finals. SUSC earned additional points at the Utah Tech contest with a fifth place win in breakaway calf roping by freshman Bernice Reeve, Hurricane. Ms. Reeve finished second in the first go-round in calf roping. She also competed in barrel racing. Also competing for SUSC were Sharla ' Fonnesbeck', a, freshman, -from Bear River," 'Bok Elder County, in barrel racing, and Kelly D. Jensen, a freshman from Monroe, in bull riding. Jensen and Jaramillo also competed in team roping. "We're pleased with SUSC's showing, especially since the team is such a young one," Mark Wright, rodeo team advisor, said. "We hope to have a full team three women, six men in the near future as soon as some eligibility requirements are met." |
