Show Pride is Subject of Escalante Contest I ESCALANTE - Developed by Principal Myron Cottam to instill in students at Escalante High school a respect for their school and community, the second annual pride contest is well underway. " Grados.seven4hrough 12 compete in six different areas throughout the school year with weekly records being kept by the school. Winners are announced at the end of the school year. At the beginning of the school year, students are told that they must work together as a class toward goals. They are judged in academics with the highest class average GPA determined on a quarterly basis. Each class submits a project to its faculty representative associated with improving the physical plant, such as ; shoveling snow to the band room, removing gum from under tables and desks, cleaning up the stage, or some similar effort designed to upgrade the school. Students are encouraged, as another part of the pride contest to think of ways to involve the community in a positive fashion. They are encouraged to include community members in ' helping on difficult class projects, for ; ' example. They are also Judged on their attendance daily at school on a class average. Dress-up day is held each Wednesday when both boys and girls are encouraged to take special pride in their appearance. This year the 7th graders have chosen to clean the Escalante cemetery as a class project; 8th graders will clean the buses after each activity trip; 9th graders will clean all the windows in the school and are. also considering helping the Escalante Lions Club dig post holes for street corner signs. Tenth graders will sand and paint the school bleachers; 11th graders will repair the baseball backstop and regularly clean the stage; and 12th graders will repair the school marquee and keep all school bulletin boards in good repair. Last year's pride contest was woh by the 8th graders who regularly picked up the school grounds, removed trash, and kept gum off tables and desks and also washed windows. Each year's winning class has the names of each class member posted on a perpetual plaque mounted at the school and gets to make an education-fun trip of its choice. Last year's winning class chose to make a visit to St. George to see first-hand some of the IDS Church historical sights. Teachers, principal and community members join in the judging process at the end of each school year. |
