Show Big Game Season Dates Set by State Officials The Board of Big Game Control has approved 16,585 antlerless deer control permits, about 1,500 more than last year, for the fall hunting seasons. Most of the increase comes in several new areas in south-central Utah, where deer herds have been Increasing in recent years. Only isolated areas in northern Utah suffered severe deer winter losses. The Board of Big Game Control set all 1982 big game seasons on June 12 after a series of public meetings June 4 through June 11. A total of 1,685 preseason deer .control, permits are being offered on 1Q hunting areas; 10,150 are being offered on 30 areas during the general statewide 11-day season October 23 through November 2; and 4,750 postseason permits are being offered on 14 hunts. The archery deer season is August 21 through September 6. Persons buying archery permits are not eligible to apply for a deer control permit, since the tag on the archery license allows the taking of a second buck deer. Two bucks may be taken during the archery season, or one buck during the archery season and one buck during the general deer season or muzzle-loader season. The muzzle-loader hunt will be held November 6 through November 14. A person harvesting a buck deer on his big game license tag will not be allowed to participate in the muzzle-loader hunt, Permits must be purchased prior to the opening of the general deer season on October 23. Hunters planning to participate in the muzzle-loader hunt may apply for a deer control permit if they do not purchase on archery permit. For the first time, control permits are valid during the muzzle-loader season for the area specif iced on the permit. The general deer season, deer archery and deer muzzle-loader seasons will be held statewide in 1982, except for three closed areas in southern Utah also closed during the past two years. These are Herd Units 31B (San Juan -Elk Ridge), 60 (Paunsaugunt portion) and 61A (Dixie-East Pine Valley). The open area bull elk season is September 29 through October 1. Restricted elk permits are being offered in 29 areas, including 395 bull permits 540 hunter's choice permits and 590 antlerless permits. Fifty of the restricted elk jpermlts are for a bulging elk hunt September 11-21 on the Uinta North Slope and Bear River-Chalk Creek units. The archery elk season coincides with the archery deer season August 21 through September 6. Persons purchasing archery elk permits by July 30 will be included in a drawing for 150 hunter's choice elk archery permits. The antelope season, September 25 through October 3, begins three weeks later than it has in past years. A total of 395 resident buck permits and 38 nonresident buck permits are being offered on 13 units during the regular season. Forty resident doe permtis and 4 nonresident doe permits will be available for the Snowville area during two October hunts. Ninety-eight resident bull moose permits and eight nonresident bull moose permits are being offered during the moose seasons. September 11-26 and November 6-21. No antlerless moose permits are being offered on the Uinta North Slope as in previous years. A recent study indicates the Uinta North Slope can support a larger moose population than originally through, so the herd will be allowed to build. Units where moose permits are being offered are the Uinta North Slope, Ogden River, Daggett, Chalk Creek, Morgan-South Rich and a new area, the Uinta South Slope. The Cache-North Rich unit will be closed to moose hunting, due to the high number of illegal moose kills in that area last year. The buffalo season will be November 6 through November 30, with 25 resident permits and two nonresident permits. One permit will be offered for a minimum bid of $2,500. Funds received from this source will be used for buffalo management and habitat development. The number of resident desert bighorn sheep permits has been reduced from 17 to 10, with no nonresident permits being offered. The season is September 18 through October 17. One desert bighorn sheep permit will be offered for a minimum bid of $20,000. Funds from this source the previous two years have been used to transplant 67 desert bighorn, sheep into historical ranges in southern Utah. - One Rocky Mountain goat permit is being offered during a season of" September 11 through September 26. |
