Show Garfield Girls Receive Scholarships Lana Houston, Panguitch High School and Ethelinda Lyman, Escalante High School were recipients of half-tuition scholarships as a result of their participation at Utah Girls State early this month at Southern Utah State College. Scholarships for the 1983-84 school year at SUSC were awarded to 15 high school seniors who attended the Girls State program. Winners of full-tuition scholarships for their freshmen year at SUSC are Nancy Bradshaw, Beaver High School; Suzanne Ewell, Payson High School; Goldie Gianoulis, Carbon High School; Zelma Hopkins, Dixie High School; Suzanne Pooll, Murray High School; Janet Imlay, Cedar High School; and Darla K, Graff, Ben Lomond High school. In addition to Misses Houston and Lyman, half tuition scholarships were also awarded Girls State participants Millicent Larsen, Spanish Fork High School; Sharon Moss, Ben Lomond High School; Brenda Walker, Pleasant Grove High School; Leslie Johnson, North Sevier High School; Catherine Jackson, Manti High School; and Dawn Beattie, Kanab High School. The scholarship winners will be seniors at their representative high schools this fall. They were among the 380 girls who attended Utah Girls State at SUSC, spending a week as guests of the American Legion auxiliary while learning the workings of local, county and state government. "It takes a special kind of young woman to be selected to attend Girls State, and it takes an extra special one to be selected for one of these SUSC scholarships," said Gerald R. Sherratt, SUSC President. "Each of the scholarship winners has demonstrated oustanding leadership ability at her high school and at Girls State. We are pleased to offer the scholarships." |
