Show Two Named to State Small Schools Group Two Garfield County residents have been named to the Board of Directors of the Utah Small Schools Association. Superintendent Henry Jolley, Garfield School District, and Louise Liston, Escalante High School teacher were named to the board along with Mitchell Kulauli, principal of White Horse High school at Montezuma Creek; Shirley Clark, a school patron of San Juan School District; Arliss Jensen, director of the Southwest Regional Media Center and Jim Miller, dean of education at Southern Utah State College. "The importance of small schools in rural Utah has never been greater," stated State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Walter Talbot. The occasion was the second annual State Small schools Cof nerence held recently at Brigham Young University in Provo. Added Talbot, "Small schools offer better opportunities for teachers and students to interact. Utah's small schools have strengths that larger schools do not have and should be leading the way in innovative school programming." To support this philosophy, the Utah Small Schools Association was formed. The president of the new organization is Dr. Lynn Haslem, superintendent of Beaver School District. Says Haslem, "With the anticipated influx of industrial and defense activities coming into our state, the small school may be transformed into a large school. We must be ready for this type of change," Duchesne District Superintendent Lowell Caldwell will serve as the association's president-elect. A 30 member statewide advisory committee for small schools also functions to advise the Utah State Board of Education on small school matters.
