Show No Penalty for Delay In Census Gathering Garfield County residents who may be worried because their census questionnaires have not been picked up should be reassured that they will suffer no penalty for any delay according to District Six census crew leader, Mrs. William (Maryon) Winkler, Panguitch. District Six includes all of Garfield County and Mrs. Winkler's crew of enumerators has completed 39.7-percent of the county's census to date. The Postal Service cannot by law accept the census questionnaires for mailing as they are scheduled to be picked up personally by census enumerators at each individual household Deadline for Garfield county's enumerators is April 25 and the busy crew is working hard to reach its goal. Mrs. Winkler was responsible for training her crew of six women and it will be her responsibility to audit each questionnaire for accuracy before it is sent to Prove She must make certain each question is properly answered and each dot properly filled in. The district manager in Provo, Karla Bergeson, reports good progress for the 1980 Census of Population and Housing, stating that census takers started the house-to-house canvass March 31, picking up filled-out questionnaires distributed earlier by the Postal Service. Census takers carry large portfolios boldly lettered "U.S. CENSUS 1980," and wear red, white, and blue badges bearing the U.S. Department of Commerce eeal and the words, "Census Enumerator, Official Credential." Anyone without this official credential claiming to be a census taker should be reported to the police. residents can speed up the big count by having their questionnaires properly filled out and ready for the census takers. This will save both the householder's and the census taker's time. At some residences the census taker asks additional questions about each person and about the house, questions that are being asked nationwide of a sample of households. In places under 2500 population one household in six is in the sample. In places under 2500 it is one in every two households. Garfield county falls into the latter category. |
