Show Government Aid Needed "The government should start recognizing the options of how it can provide greater support for the care of children under four years of age," suggests Dr. Craig Peery, assistant professor In the Family and Human Development Depart-ment at Utah State University. Parents of young children are needing and wanting to work outside the home, but the very real problem that faces them is "what do we do with our children who are not in school?" "The public school system is doing a fine job of caring for 5 to 18 year-olds, but there aren't institutionalized approaches to caring for children who are under 5," said Dr. Peery. Dr. Peery believes 4 year-olds need different care and experiences than 2 year-olds. He suggests it would be better to have someone trained, licensed and sensitive to a 2 year-olds needs, rather than just farming a child out with anyone in the neighborhood who is available when the parents are not. "Wouldn't it be better to have developed day care systems fully regulated to meet the standards parents want, rather than having no control over the care that is given?" |
