Show DIX.E FOREST TIMBER SOLD TO KAIBAB INDUSTRY Forest Supervisor AMn F. Wright announced that on December 27th, Kalbab Indus' tries was the purchaser of the Big Lake Timber Sale, located on the Teasdalc Ranger District of the Dixie National Forest. Kalbab was the only bid-dir for the sale which con- '. n - three million board feet or Engelmann Spruce sawlogs. The sale area Is located 24 ini'cs southwest of Bicknell. As a contractual requirement of the sale, Kalbab will reconstruct 3.6 miles of the Griffin Top road. They will also deposit over $10,000 into a fund for the lmprovcent of the residual timber stand. Tills sale was made In full accord with "The National Environmental Policy Act of 1969." The timber will be harvested using the Shelterwood svstem. For Engelmann spruce growing In this area of the Dixie National Forest it is desirable to provide some shade to facilitate establishment of a new crop of seedlings, Under the planned system a new Urn-Lako City. They brought Rhon-seed source left on the sale area. It should not be necessary to hand plant tree seedlings. In order to protect the young trees already growing on the sale area several special contractual clauses have been provided. All new road construction will be closely super-viesd and the location approved in advance of construction. Where possible, old roads already existing will be used. Slash resulting from road construction will be completely disposed of. Directional felling of the harvest crop will be required to protect the already established stand. Skidding to Forest Service approved landings will be done only by rubber tired articulated skldders. Experience has shown that a careful operator with a more mobile skldder, such as will be used on this sale, can do much to prevent damage to the residual stand. Harvesting operations o n this sale are exoected to beeln next spring. The logs will be hauled to the company's sawmill at Panguitch. Woods boss for the company will be Tine Brinkerhoff of Ordervllle. Supervising operations for the Forest Service will be District Ranger Ted Knowlea of Teas-dale. i i |
