Show r , Escalante Chit Chat BY FAY ALVEY Finally got some storm, some real nice showers which were badly needed, the North West part of town got hall which they did not need. The flash floods were a nuisance. Some folks were marooned on the other side of the ten mile overnight; the River bridge was completely covered, holding travelers up on both sides. The State road crew happened to be on the Boulder side and when it went down to bridge level they cleaned the trees and other obstacles off. They were assisted by some Forest workers and Charley Francisco. He was taking a short cut from Wayne County and got in on the action. Dean Gledhlll took sick on the job so Dale Wilson flew him to the Page hospital where he had his appendix removed. He is doing well. Freeland and Phyllis Alvey took his parents Forest and! Ruth Alvey to Salt Lake CltyJ where Forest was scheduled fora surgery. Arnold and Zella Al- vey had daughter Gayle Stone-) hocker and children here from Salt Lake City, then her husband Earl who is a traveling man Joined them here. Gayle became 111 and Earl and Zella took her to the Pangultch hospital where the doctor checked her and said she could go back to Salt Lake City to her own doctor. She gave birth to a premature baby boy and they are both doing ok. Earl got a friend to fly him here to get his camper and the kids. The Alveys also had son Don and family here from Salt Lake. Allen Pollock is home from the hospital feeling fairly well. The Frank Colemans have their baby daughter home and of course, Katheryn, they had her christened Sunday and given the name Deann. The Frank Imlays called grandson Jerry at Kanosh to wish him "Happy Birthday" and found that his parents, Glen and Coleen had moved to Delta close to Francis and Barbara. Coleen will commute to help with the Dairy Queen until it closes. Leo Wilson got word of the death of his sister, Alice Newell, who passed away In Riverside, California. Ber-nlce took him to Cedar City to get the bus to go there for the services. The Wilsons went to St. George and located an apartment for son Robert so he ' could attend Dixie College. Have you noticed anyone walking around minus a right boot? One showed up at Don Coleman's. He don't know if some man was making a quick getaway and lost It or where it came from. He wishes if anyone leaves him something it would be a complete pair and in a smaller size. Beaumont and Verda Griffin visited friends in Hatch and went on to Little's Ranch and visited my folks. Dot 'and Anthony Coombs stopped there the same day enroute to Cedar City. Delmar Cottam is back home after touring Old Mexico. Doyle and Thelma Cottam en-Joyed their trip on the Clawson Tours. They also enjoyed the visit of Monlka Jacobl of Heme, Germany. Myron met the Jacobl family while on a mission in Germany. They were converts and so good to all the missionaries. The family had planned to come to America but the mother was ailing so they let Monlka come by herself so she flew to Los Angeles where some of the former missionar ies met her ana snowea ner around, then she went to Salt Lake City where others extended their hospitality. Then Myron showed her around this area. She was especially Interested In ranches, cattle and cowboys on horses. She spoke fairly good engllsh and noticed that pink was a much used color in America. She even had a pink fish from Posey Lake. She wanted to meet Anglea Brooks, but somehow they never did get together. The local law enforcement officers think it only fair to warn the public that they plan to enforce the litter laws In and around Escalante, Anyone caught dropping litter of any kind and degree will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Do not think that be-cause Reed Wooley Is out of town for awhile that there ait no law officers left, because there are plenty more to catch offenders. Neta Shirts spends her days off hero working her head off. On the Job at Bryce when she gets tired itlie has to grin and bear It but at home she only has to bear it. She and Morris were honored at Cedar City in commemoration of their Golden Wedding anniversary. All family members were present. Congratulations folks, you came through exceptionally well Mr. and Mrs. Haws Smoot and tome friends from Marys- vale visited the S. J. Alveys enroute to the fishing area. Leone Haycock attended a family reunion at Richfield. The Elmer Smiths made a quick trip to Salt Lake for fence materials, up and back In a day. Then they went to Calif, to get their grandkids to spoil them awhile before their parents come. They got a Shetland pony and a little saddle, but got Tyler Lyman and Mike Alvey to get the kinks out of the pony before the kids get here. Mike was visiting his relatives while his dad LaDell was working in this area. Hyrum and Mary Ellen Coleman had a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Orland Heaps and two kids from Sandy. The Cole-mans went to Kanab for the wedding reception of Mr. and Mrs. Nolan Button. They stayed overnight. Twila Mclnelly visited the Hal Barkers in Salt Lake City. She came home with Millie Mclnelly and Randal Lyman who had been North to a funeral of Maurice Lyman. Twila and A. J. were home a-lone and feeling lonely when Sherill Davis came to visit, he had brought a group of Boy Scouts from Washington to Provo and came on down. Bessie Griffin, Iola Woolsey, Christine Tatman and baby daughter and Sharee Coleman went to Bryce Cnyon to see Bessie's sister, Bertha Clark, who was conducting a tour from Oregon, they had a delightful time. Dale Lyman took Lillian back to Las Vegas for a medical checkup. She is doing well since her surgery. Dawn Griffin went to Sunnyslde to see that new granddaughter born to Nlckl and Evan Excell. Sar-lah Alvey took her Ford to Price for Its checkup, granddaughter Irene drove. Patrice and Jeanette Griffin accompanied them. Mother Alvey had a date with Floyd Baker. Leda Emery, her son Jay, his wife and three kids and the dog visited Iris Porter and other relatives. Lane and Geraldlne Lis-ton and kids went to Salt Lake they took the Kelly kids, Karen, KaCee and Karol and put them on a plane for Texas where they will visit their aunt Jane until time for school. Verge and Shlrlee Spencer had a phone call from son Marion in Viet Nam saying he had his orders to leave there Sept. 11, and he was one happy boy. Shlrlee and daughters Doris and Tammy had business in Pangultch and Cedar City. Others we heard of going to Cedar were the Arnold Alveys and dauhters Raylene and Denlse, Karen Kelly, Margo Gates, Andrew and Isabell Spencer, Theron and Dixie Mitchell and girls. Jaleen Pollock and fam-lily went to Rexburg, Idaho, to visit Ervin and Coleen Burrows and family. David and Marlyn Griffin are home from Logan for a short vacation at the Grant Ilstons. He also has niece Rose Marie from Las Vegas. Claron and Ruby Griffin went to Salt Lake City for more building material. Sharon Dale and Shirley Marsh went to Salt Lake City to pick out things for their new house. The Marshes went to Cedar City for a wedding reception of some relatives. Don and Deanna Heap also went. Don finished at BYU and Deanna met him in Hatch and they went to Cedar from there. Renon Reed and girls were here from Monroe at the Ott ivvuuu;a, trs viuvvi took the kids to Bryce Canyon for a special program. Roger and Nancy Attwood got word from Price that his father is very ill. Thell Barney went to Cedar City for an eye operation. He had to be blindfolded for several days but he looked everyone over beforehand so he knew how the people looked who were leading him around. Thell got his blind off and he and Roxie went to Salt Lake City to buy a trailer house as they are moving to Logan where he has employment. The Doug Cleveits were here at the Randal Lymans. Janice Gledhlll had her parents, Ernie and Betty Hill and son here. Janice Janalee Taylor, Raylene Alvey and Mable Griffin went to Richfield. Ma-ble stayed to baby sit for Caroline Eyre. The Gall Baileys had son Terrill and his son here from Las Vegas. The Lorenzo Griffins have son Lewis and family here from Provo. Bud and Aloha Porter and family and Edith Sharp were here from Bountiful. Rolalne Lyman and family visited in Kanab. Marlene Haws, Clorine Vid-rlne, Janene and Christine Alvey were In Pangultch. Mayo and Louise Roundy went to Salt Lake to see the circus. Vergene, Vergenela and Sloan Porter went to Cedar City. John Yukon and Debbie Norman went to Pangultch for den-(continued on back page) ESCALANTE (continued from front page) tal appointments. So many ot our folks went for the Fair and Riding Club meet we can't name them. Our citizens did very well at the Fair: Orllla Cowles took sweepstakes with her rug; Joyce O'Neil sweepstakes in her dress; Luclnda Alvey first in phase 6 with her dress; Irene Alvey phase 5 took first with her wool pants suit. They get to go to the State Fair, so does Donene Liston in speech and with cinnamon rolls. Ludnda won blue ribbons, on her quilt .and some hand work. Wayne Alvey got blue ribbons on vegetables; Nelda Willis on a dress suit ( and Gwen Lyman on a pants suit. And If anyone was missed it's your own fault for not calling me. The "Miss Garfield County" contest was held here with 11 contestants. Bill Lamb was MC. Bob Mitchell and Sonny O'Neal counted the votes. Mr. and Mrs. Tony Larson from the Red Rocks, and Mr. and Mrs. Felix from Cedar City were the Judges. Jan Liston is Miss Garfield County with Cindy Tebbs 1st attendant and Catherine Jensen 2nd. Marjl Spencer went to Colorado for a work shop. Mildred Deuel of Pangultch visited at the Melvin Alvey home. Bernard and Ora Schow went to Salt Lake City to have the Doctor check the injured leg of Bernard's he has been walking on it. Eldon and Amber Griffin had her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Olcott here from Richfield. Hilo and Lettie Boyce had son Acel and family home. Stake quarterly conference was held as scheduled with meetings Saturday night for ward and stake officers. A public session was held Sunday morning with the singing by the Singing Mothers accompanied by Areola Gates and directed by Thelma Cottam. Larvin Pollock was released from the High Council and Vergil put in. Don Heap is an alternate member. All talked. Other speakers were Lorell Munson, Malen Mecham, Debbie Stoddard, Tom Walker, Sherrlll Nelson, Lowell Mecham and Chase Shurtz. Lewis Walker sang accompanied by Judy Woodsberry. Small towns have their drawbacks, but one advantage we've got, we pretty well know whose checks are good and whose husbands are not. |
