Show 'Uncle's' Big Factor in County Economy I Government employment a-mounted to 29.1 percent of the total number of persons on agricultural payrolls in Garfield County during June, 1966. This fact was shown in the latest study of government employment in Utah, prepared by Utah Foundation, the private governmental research organization. The report shows that of the 1,153 nonfarm employees In Garfield County, a total of 336 were working for some agency of government. This included 149 Federal employees, 40 state employees, and 147 local employees. The report emphasizes that all of the figures for "government employment" used in this study include only persons employed directly by government agencies and exclude persons working for private firms engaged primarily or entirely in government contract work. Such persons are listed as private manufacturing employees. According to the Foundation study, government employ- ! ment has been rising at about twice the rate of the increase for private employment in U-tah. The increase in total Utah nonagricultural employment has been 19 percent since 1960 and 35 percent since 1956., The number of government jobs, on the other hand, jumped 47 per cent between 1960 and 1966 and 70 percent from the number in 1956. In Garfield County, governmental employment rose from 295 in June, 1960, to 336 In June, 1966, a 13.9 percent rise during the six year period. |
