Show Escalante Chit Chat FAY ALVEY We had a February freeze with zero weather which is rather unusual. The last day or two Is warmer but there is considerable snow on North sides, and the mud is still abundant. Most of the sick are better; Evan Schow is recovering fine from surgery, Leo Wilson is home to finish healing up, Philo Pratt is some better but not well enough to go to St. George with his family. Florence Alvey has had several bad cases of strep throat but is'better; Randal Lyman got word of the death of an aunt, May Ly- man, wife of Amasa Lyman who ,used to live in Wayne County;. he and Gwen, James and Millie Mclnelly and son Vern went to Sandy for the services. Gwen and Randal stayed the weekend to visit their kids, the Mclnellys visited daughter Elma briefly and Mary Lyman who came from Idaho and will now stay with John and Ora Bell Weigle in Salt Lake until Spring comes to Escalante, then she will be home. Sharon Schow Carlson and small son went with the Mclnellys as far as Salem where she visited her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Curtis, then came home with them. Onetta K. Shurtz came from Garland to visit Earl and Ne-thella Woolsey, and the three of them took a trip, will tell you where when they get home and report. Ivan Willis had business in Kanab so Nelda went' for the ride. Garna Mclnelly had an appointment for medical checkup in Panguitch eo Nelda accompanied her. Bil-lie Davis and Neta Shirts went to Panguitch for a welfare meeting so Minnie, Mother Alvey and myself went for medical checkups. Dr. Dugglns released Minnie and roe, telling her to use her arm moderately and me to start to walk, and believe me that Is quite a process after three months In a wheel chair, the old legs forgot what to do. John Zenz was consoling me how much shoe leather I was saving this winter; it was easy on shoe leather but mighty hard on seat covers. John and Lola made some news, had business in. Cedar Cit where they stayed overnight with friends, then traveled Cedar Mountain between snowbanks to Kanab, then on home. They had a phone call from Barbara LaBrere in Sacramento, Calif, that Max had passed away. She came homo from..vork at noon and found him dead in bed, Saturday, the 19th. Bar-bara is working as receptionist in a dentist's office. John did not have enough ailments all ready so had to get a case of gout. Zelma Wilson resigned her ttake office as Vtfltlng Teacher leader when she was put in "Tf i. , . the ward Relief Society presidency, Lillie Spencer was put in the Stake position. Del Wilson of Hatch was here on business, he said he had gone from bad to worse; quit politics and gone into Real Estate. His wife was with him but just for the ride. Reeves Baker had business In Salt Lake so Laura accompanied him and they visited daughter Laurel and girls in Provo, t and her relatives in Salt Lake.. 'Laura' reports'lief mother, LaVern George feeling quite well, says she gets a-round the house and waits on herself. Blake Robinson, Paul Steed and Dale Marsh had business in Milford, they visited enroute in Panguitch. Neta Poulsen, Fay Jepson, Emeron and Renon Peterson, Bishop Leland and Golda Haws of Boulder were here last week. Don White and Johnny Davis were here trading horses. Two state road officials from upstate spent Friday here showing films and giving instructions on safe driving. The Grant Spencers have son Donald home on a two week furlough before going to Fort Ord, Calif. The Claron Griffins took Ray and Lenora Griffin to Page and left them so Ray could have' medical treatment, Melba Gates went with them. Dr. Kazan brought them home by air. Usher Spencer and Arthur Mclnelly are freighting cattle out and bringing back coal and grain. Vernon Griffin and Smith Alvey took their families to the St. George temple Satur- day, they were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Alvey, Billle and Minnie Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Usher Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Liston, Mr. and Mrs. Hal Shurtz, Mr. and Mrs. Dee Haws, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Guyman, Mont and Ethyl Griffin, Cal Forter, and Wallace Roundy. Wallace and family visited relatives in Ka-narravllle. The S. J. Alveys and Billle and Minnie Davis visited Holbert and Bonnie Smith in Cedar City and La-Fayette Alvey and wife in Washington. At the temple they talked with Ervin and Abbie Riddle and the. Pereell Alveys. Those we heard of going to Hatch for the funeral services of Earnest Rlggs were President and Mrs. J. Clyde Spencer, Pres. and Mrs. E. Dee Haws, Mr. and Mrs. John Norman, Mr. and Mrs; Starns Mecham, Bishop and Mrs. Morris Shirts, Thel Barney, Deon Alvey, Mar-lene Haws, and Geraldine liston. Had a letter from Grover Smith in Viet Nam and as it was meant for so many will quote his own words: "I received so many cards from folks around home . while I (continued inside) ESCALANTE (continued) was in the hospital and never got them answered I was wondering if you would thank them all for me. It sure made me feel great to know so many people are thinking about me, and I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart, and let them know how I appreciate it very much. I am out of the hospital and back where the action is." End quote, he just went on to say how much ho enjoyed the Garfield County News and asked about my health, etc. Wish he had told us more about himself, we are all interested. Sunday was my first time to church this year, the South ward has a whole new group of deacons and new Hymn books, their speakers were Bp. Morris and Neta Shirts, and Karl Thurber. Donene Ljston played a piano solo and Louise Lis-ton read off the names of the girls receiving special awards. In tha North ward the speakers were Wallace Roundy, Rol Porter, Minnie Davis, Hal Shurtz and Myron Cottam, Julie Shurtz played a piano solo. Some people definitely don't act their age, they could all do It better by far, If they hadn't lied about it so long they've forgotten how old that they arc. |
