Give life, Give Blood, Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the Pangultch Social Hall from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Fear is the greatest obstacle a person has to overcome to be a blood doner. Here is some helpful information on blood supply in the body. We all have about 12 pints of blood and this can be reduced In volume by 112 and still have plenty left in our circulatory system for normal body functions. The body replaces blood very rapidly and in about 20 days the red cell count is back to the same level that it was prior to the donation. There is a constant change in the blood supply and in 120 days a complete change is made, as the maximum life of a red cell Is 120 days. This is why blood donations can be made safely, because blood is replaced rapidly. Before you donate a pint of blood a medical screening is done to insure proper blood, pressure, adequate hemoglob-ulin or iron content in the blood, questions are asked regarding contact with various diseases to insure that you are in normal good health andean share a pint of blood with someone whose life may depend on it. A doctor is present at all times, and the drawing of blood is done by registered nurses who have dally experience in this technique and are skilled in this procedure. Following a blood donation the blood is analyzed and each first time donor is sent a card telling them their blood group and type. This valuable information should be carried at all times in the event of an emergency need. It is well to know that blood is expensive if not replaced and that in our area a cost of 50 for the first pint plus $25 for each additional pint is the normal fee; this in addition to the normal administration charges. In addition to .the whole blood service provided, many people have need for blood derivatives such as gamma globulin, figrinogen. serum albumin and others. These products are extremely expensive commercially but are provided by Red Cross without charge for the product as a part of the whole blood program service. |
