Show Political Pot Simmers As Last Minute Filinds Fill Slates FOREST FIRES The forest fire danger has been critical for the past few weeks. The burning index has been as high as 87 in Pangultch. Under these conditions, fires start easily and spread rapidly. Ranger Orvllle Daniels reports that there have been three fires on the Dixie National Forest recently. The largest occurred on Whlteman Bench, west of Bryce Canyon National Park, and was a man-caused fire. Only fast action on the part of the Park Service and Forest Service personnel kept It from becoming a quite large fire; 40 men, a tractor and a water truck were used in control. Two lightning fires were found and suppressed by For-est Service patrols. Everyone is urged to be careful with fire and to report any they see to the Forest Service or Bryce Canyon National Park. WHv JIHHiHI Nethella G. Woolsey Mrs. Nethella Griffin Woolsey has filed for the Democratic nomination to the Utah State Legislature. Mrs. Woolsey who taught school for 31 years, mostly cat Bear River High School In Box Elder County, served as Elementary School Supervisor of Garfield County prior to her retirement. Since retiring she has actively managed one of the largest cattle ranches in east-brn Garfield County. A booster of southern Utah, she was elected to the State Legislature in 1956, serving out the two year term, and Is at present a member of Boulder Town Board. Attending the Excell reunion at Salt Lake were the James Excell and Dick Excell families and Mrs. Gean Sevy and family. Dorothy .Sue and Greg Excell came home after a visit with sister Barbara , Gal Marshall in the City. The Dick Excells girls Shauna, Corrine and Tammy are visiting in the City with their grandmother Mrs. Fern Wln-zenried. Mr. and Mrs. Frank L. Cline had a house full of guests over the 4th of July weekend. Frank Jr .arrived from Long Beach with his girl friend Nan Weatherfleld of Alhambra, Calif, his friend Jack Hall of the U.S. Navy and his girl friend Llynn Weatherfleld also of Alhambra. The foursome had to leave at noon on the 4th to make it back to work on time Tuesday. Mrs. Cecil Orton of Bakers-field, Calif is spending a few weeks with her mother Mrs. Leatha Moore. The Mel Glaziers of Kanab were weekend visitors at the Moore home. Mrs. Margaret Haycock has her daughter Elizabeth Wine-gard and son visiting her. A rush of last minute filings assured each party of a full slate of candidates in the November elections. There will be primary contests in each category on the Republican side but none on the Democratic side. Filing for 4-ycar County Commissioner wero M. V. Hatch (R), LeGrande Farns-worth (R), Dan Perkins (D) all of Pangultch. Two-year Commissioner hopefuls are Sam Pollock (R) and Harmon Shakespear (R) both of Tropic, and George Thompson (D), Cannonvilie. Bidding for nomination and election to the State Legislature as Garfield County's Representatives are Mat Houston (R) of Pangultch, Jesse S. Wilson (R) of Hatch, and Nethella G. Woolsey (D) of Boulder. Running for State Senator are Vernon L. Holman (D) of Pangultch, D. Q. Cannon (R) of ClrclevUle, Van Wiley (R) of Antimony. |
