Show ESCALANTE CHIT CHAT By Pay Alvcy Mrs. Mildred Woolsey entertained at a Bridal shower Monday, Jan. 7th, at her home in honor of her daughter, Sharon, who recently married Bill Fran-, cisco of Henrleville. Many friends and relatives called and the newlyweds received some lovely and useful gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Blake Robinson are expecting their son, Elder Blake D. Robinson, home the last of this month from a 2-year mission in Norway for the LDS Church. He will be released January 17 and leave for home next day. His parents will meet him in Salt Lake City. Bishop and Mrs. Lorrel Munson and Mr. and Mrs. Park Shurtz left early Monday mornirig for Taft, Calif, where they planned to remain overnight with the Arden Woolseys and ifrom there, accompanied by the Woolseys, they drove to Los Angeles where the three couples anticipated going through the Los Angeles Temple. (They returned home Friday. Mrs. Marian Adair is visiting in Calif, with her son Jerry Porter and family. Jerry came for his mother and also his sister DeLoa Porter. a June Liston entertained at quiltings two days of " last week, completing two quilts. Ladies helping her ,were: Sariah Alvey, Wil-mirth Wooley, Nell Barker, Nelda Willis, Veda Mitchell, Rillie Cowles, Alice Bailey, La Rue Grif fin, and Amanda Mitchell. Andrew Norton is hero from Salt Lake -City visiting relatives and friends and gathering genealogy. His late wife, Martha Davis, was a former resident of Escalante and a sister of Maggie Davis Lay. D.U.P. meeting was held Jan. 10th at the D.U.P. home, with 19 members present. Captain Alice S. Bailey presided and first vice captain Sariah C. Alvey conducted. Ruby T. Osborne read a history of her great grandmother Ann S. Cottam. Class leader Lola R. Zenz gave the lesson after which lunch was served by Lola R. Zenz, Maggie Lay, Lena Rollins, and Elizabeth Porter. I The Better Homes and Garden Club held their meeting Friday nifeht at tho home of Mrs. Florence Alvey. Ardene Bench, the seminary teacher, showed Polio pictures, and a lovely lunch was served by Florence assisted by her husband Melvin. This club is putting over the Polio drive, under the direction of Joy Gates. Ray Grlffinn is . in tho LDS hospital in Salt Lake City where ho underwent surgery. At the last report his condition was improving. Mr. and Mrs. Roe Barney have bought the Tom Alvey home. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Alvey of Boulder were here last week on business. DeLane Griffin is sporting a new Ford. Lois Liston Payton, who teaches type, band and English jat the High School, slipped and fell Friday night, fracturing her knee. She was taken to tho Pan-gultch hospital, treated and returned home. Mrs. Norma Liston will tench her classes until she Is able to return to school. Dale Webber, supervisor of the S.C.S., was here to see Ivan Willis, our local SCS man. Clarice Grfffln, Lizzie Porter and Lavern Woolsey have been confined to their homes with flu. -. Speakers Sunday in Sacrament meeting wore: South ward: E. D. Haws of the Stake Presidency, and Chase Shurtz of the high council. North ward: Stake President Clyde Spencer, and Lorenzo Griffin and Roland Porter of the high council. A Scout training course was held Saturday, Jan. 12, at the South ward church for all persons in-terested in Scouting. There 'were four executives from Provo: Floyd .Loverige, Chief Executive; A. Wm. Brown, over the Primary Dept.; Stanley Lenard, training chairman; Howard Nelson, Exploring; also Phil Harman from Richfield who instructed the scout masters. Registering commenced at 9 a.m, then classes werecon- ducted until 4 p.m. with time out for a turkey dinner at noon, and juice breaks in tho forenoonand afternoon. Forty eight persons took this training; that was not as many as had been anticipated, but the roads were wet and every ward was represented except Henrlovllle. ' Two of our young people were bound together in the holy bonds of matrimony Saturday, Jan. 12, at the St. George temple. Quite a group of friends and relatives accompanied them. The bride was Gor-aldlne Mecham, the groom Lane Liston. Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Starns Mecham, Mr. and Mrs. Wil-ford Liston. A'llle Spencer, Lane's grandmother, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Pratt Gates, Mr. arid Mrs. Otto Roundy, all of Escalante, and Bishop and Mrs. Malen Mecham, and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Pollock of Tropic. After a short honeymoon the young couplo' will return home and llve'in the Dicey Porter- home.. On-Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Salt Lake Tribune, Dan Valentine, in his. "No-, thing Serious" column, gave a public' pat on the back to Mildred G. Allen of our town who stepped down as post mistress Dec. 31, after serving for 27 years. We all love and appreciate Mrs.- Allen and will miss Tier in the post office. Wayne Barney will have to keep on hiB toes to fill her place. She is the wife of County Commissioner Heber J. Allen, Merril Porter and family of Mesa, Arizona has been here visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Porter. Billie Davis, Wanless Alvey, and Bill 'Payne went on a five day 'business trip last week to Richfield arid points North. It is rumored that Billio was investigate ing a singing Bchool. They . returned home Friday night and Wanless and Billie couldn't find tbeir wives. After considerable Bleuthing they were located up at tho Gall Bailey home where a supper was in progress. Others partaking of the Bailey's hospit- allty were Mr. and Mrs. Reed Thompson and Mr. and Mrs. Blake Robinson. We are all thrilled over the moisture that has fallen, some warm rain fol- lowed the snow. That snow was really a novelty to the youngsters; of course wo adults can remember when it used to snow. |
