Show ELWOOD DRAI NAfiE DISTRICT COMPLETE another utah drainage district has been completed this most recent district Is the elwood drainage district located at elwood utah in the bear river valley in box elder county it comprises 2600 acres of formerly highly productive orchard and farm land near the bear river much of the land in the district had been rendered render ed more or less lesa unproductive due to water logging and there h had ad been some accumulations ot of salts the district was organized on august 9 17 1922 with J W francom c om J W iverson and amos hansen as drainage supervisors Marga margaretta and of 0 salt lake city were retained as engineers and mr william J lowe ot of brigham city was retained as counsel A bond issue ot of was approved at an election held on november 6 1922 and the issue was sold to the palmer bond and mortgage company of salt lake city at 95 12 1 2 per cent of 0 par for or sixes on november 10 1922 a contract tor for the construction work was awarded to the baer drainage company ot of Trie Tria monton utah and construction work was begun on the day ot of that month A complete tile drainage system was installed the tile sizes range from 5 inches to 20 inches in inside diameter the tile were laid in machine constructed str acted ted trenches ranging from 5 12 1 2 to 14 feet deep tile joints were protected wherever necessary by strips ot of heavy rooting material there are ten tea outlets in the system some ot of which discharge into bear river and others into sloughs and old drains the average tall fall in the drains Is about 10 feet per mile the minimum 2 12 1 2 feet per mile and the maximum about 18 12 1 2 feet per mile provision Is P made ads tor for taking care ot of surface water from the highway and from a pond in the district the work was pushed rapidly three machines being used at once part ot of the time and was finally completed in may 1923 nine months atter after the petition for organization was first presented this Is a record tor for progress in drainage district organization and construction it is reported that a very efficient and satisfactory system has been installed and beneficial results are apparent already the most gratifying feature howe however vei is that the cost of the project indicates that prewar pre war conditions have returned the entire cost including overhead legal engineering and organization costs was only 23 per acre compared with the average cost of 37 per acre obtaining during the war this reduced cost will be of interest to the various drainage districts tn in utah which have been awaiting favorable conditions in the case of districts the organization of which is under contemplation says R A hart senior drainage engineer of the U S bureau of public roads immediate steps should be taken toward effecting such organization since ever every season of delay represents a sa osa greater than the cost coat of re reclamation tn in the elwood district |
