Show SMITH AND HOLMES ADDRESS ROTARIANS clarence E smith principal of 0 the bear river high school and will R holmes were the speakers at the weekly luncheon ot of the brigham rotary club last friday the luncheon was held at the banquet hall ball of the hotel boothe principal smith stated that he hod lived in the bear river valley some thirteen years and during that time had also been connected with the box elder county school system mr smith Is also employed during the summer by the utah idaho sugar company in looking after its irrigation system he stated that the lands ot of that section would never suffer from drouth due to the efficient irrigation system and ample water supply from bear river and bear lake there are acres ol of land under the irrigation system which provides cubic teet feet of water per second it if this water was all impounded it would cover the valley to a depth ot of 4 12 1 2 feet the system provides I 1 second toot foot tor for every 80 acres the valley produces to acres of 0 sugar beets with an average ot of 16 tons per acre the beets bring the farmers something like one and one fourth collars dollars per year however beets are not the only product of ate bear river valley as the soil is adapted tor for all kinds ot of agricultural crops which are grown there in abundance the farmers are entering into pea growing with a vim which promises to be one ot of the I 1 lead e ad ing crops produced mr holmes very interestingly discussed the history of the printing business from its earliest inception down to the present time he also discussed the newspaper business generally telling of 0 the many burdens that are carried by the country newspaper and what the public expect ot of a country editor mr holmes argued in favor of laws that would require the printing and publishing ot of the minutes of 0 all public boards to let the people known know just jus how ow their their money Is being spent and just who Is receiving it bill was just getting warmed up when his time expired |
