Show GRAND CHARACTER BALL. Successful Social Event, Under the Auspices of The Ladies Self-Culture Club. ............................... s Tho grand Character Ball given Wednesday evening at the Garland Amusement hall, under tho auspices of tho Ladies' Self-Culture Club, proved to be otio of tho most successful social events of the season, over 200 people being in attendance. Sixty one characters wore represented, among them being kings, queens, princes, rulers, sailors, coons, school girls, in-diaus, in-diaus, cow boys, flower girls, old maids, minus, tramps, chinamen, china-men, colonial characters, greenhorns and many others. Some of tho costumes wore elegant and quite a number of the "comical" "com-ical" kind created lote of merriment. A worthy.and noteable feature of tho affair was that mauy of the finest costumes worn were all home-made and showed great skill and ability along this line. We regret to note 'that the men folk failed to take tho interest in the matter of costuming that thoy should have do no and wo heard ono lady say that she hoped that next time a character ball is given that enough men will appear in costume to dance with the ladies, at leasC ,. The gentlemen who had "get up" enough to dress for tho occasion deserve great credit, although thoy were fow and far j, between. The excellent music furnished for the social was rendered by the Garland orchestra. i Two prizes were given, one gentleman's prize and one ladies' prize. The ladies' prize, a handsomo hand-painted china plate, was won by Mrs. C. 0. Anderson, who represented a chinaman. The gentleman's prize, a gold scarf pin, went to W. L. Grover, who represented Undo Sam. Tho judges were Bur-dott Bur-dott Smith, Joseph Wing and Mrs. L. W. Preston. Mrs. C. 0. Anderson favored tho jolly crowd with a Chinese solo. I . IY All who took part in the dance had a very enjoyable time and v the spectators woro well paid for attonding.
