In his annual rc)ort to tho secretary of war, mndo public Sunday, brings to his nttcntion tho wreck of tho United Stntcs battleship Malno In Havana harbor, and recommends thnt tho government gov-ernment take Immedlnto steps to accomplish ac-complish Its removal without further delay. Ho says: "The wreck of tho Malno continues to Ho In tho mud nnd waters of Havana Ha-vana harbor. The sunken battleship Is a serious mcnaco to tho shipping of tho harbor, as It occupies a portion of tho best anchorage. Tho obstruction has Incrensed annually during tho past ton years by causing a shoal. Tho modorato tides prevailing In tho hnr-bor hnr-bor are hardly sulllclcnt to prevent a gradual filling up, and this shoal seriously se-riously Interferes with tho action at tho tides, and, therefore, tho entire harbor Is rapidly tilling. It will bo necessary, In a short time, to begin dredging In ordor to provldo propor anchorage for tho largo amount ot shipping now entering tho harbor, un. less tho wreck Is removed. Tho an-chorago an-chorago Is also restricted by tho wreck and tho shoal, for ships are obliged to anchor at sufllclent dlstanco to prevent pre-vent grounding In caso they strain on their cables." |
