Show B Telephones Do Not i Spread Disease. t The notion that disease is l communicated by telephone j mouthpieces was freely spread H j about some years ago by pro-I pro-I motors of atrachments offered ? as a remedy for his alleged H danger. H The question of transmission H of disease by telephone mouth- H icces was, at that time, sub- H , mitted to an eminent New York H i bacteriologist, who conducted H tests upon mouthpieces of va- H rius typos, and also took "oul- H 1 tures" from mouthpieces of H public telephones used by hun- H dreds of persons daily. At the H same period similar tests woro H ' conducted by competent scion- tists in Boston, London, Buff-H Buff-H i ulo and other centers. H 'j These soporato investigations H S J yielded a common result. No H disease germs could bo dotoct- H ed. Danger was declared neg- H ' ligiblo. No case of transmission H of diseaso has ever boon traced B J to the telephone. H ( . Only one precaution was ro- H If commended by investigators H I F t that of cleanliness, such as H ! I ' keeping the mouthpieces free H I' from dust, und washing thorn H i , v occasionally with soap and 3 ;'i ' Sfe Ono of tho attachments offer- I ; ml ed at the time the germ scare started contained a fragrant fluid said to bo destructive to germs. A bacteriologist placed some real germs on a telephone mouthpiece fitted with this attachment at-tachment and left it twenty-four hours. When opened the germs were alive and well. He stated that this fluid had no germicidal propertiex, but merly gave a pleasant odor. It was also shown that agitation agita-tion by promoters of attachments attach-ments rested on no srieutific' knowledge, but was puroly a "scare'" organized for selfish purposes. Therefore, talk freely into tho telephone mouthpieco, and close enough to give clearness. Rest assured that there there is no likelihood of either contracting contract-ing or spreading diseaso in this m a n n o r. Suggestion Book, New York Telephone Company. |
