Show SUPREME COURT RULING ASKED IN SEMINARY CASE the supreme court will be called on to pass upon legal phases of establishing church seminaries la close proximity to tho the public schools and allowing credits for religious instruction this was decided saturday at a meeting between the state board of education and a committee representing the C hurch church department of education commissioner joseph F merrill Merrl ll robert 1 L judd attorney and guy 0 wilson allson supervisor of the church department part ment of education presented the churchs churche position commissioner merrill merrall presented copies ot of his statement in reply to the report of the states subcommittee committee sub and 1 I L williamson state high school inspector in which mr merrill defended the churchs churche position following some further comments com menta by Commis eloner merrill Merrl ll a statement iwas was made by mr judd that tho the church school authorities would wll wil longly join the state department in initiating a friendly suit to test teat out the legal questions involved A special committee commett ee consisting of C AL A robertson Rol ertson of moab george A eaton of salt lake and joshua greenwood of salt lake was appointed to join with a committee of the church department in working out the procedure it Is the understanding that the case would hinge on the action of 0 the state board of education taken on january 6 5 1916 which approved the erect lon of a church seminary near the granite high school in 1912 and also approved the allowance of one credit of high school work for or two years yeara classes in the seminary des dee eret news |
