Show I 1 garfield d county must get busy if it expects to derive benefits from the tourists EVERY INCH OF ROAD BUILT IN THE COUNTY BENEFITS EVERY CITIZEN AND EVERY TAXABLE INDUSTRY HELPS THE TAX LET HAVE MORE industries AND BETTER BETTER ROADS it begins to look as aa though pan gultch with her beautiful brye bryce e canyon wonderful castro canyon pan duitch lake and all the other great things wo we have to show the tourists will b be found sitting on tho the rip 0 rack waiting for et a helper to come along and shavo us out in front so BO that someone can see us and it also begins to took look as aa though we would have to 0 o move the town up to the showalter ranch it if we ever get to rea see thI people pass through or derive I 1 any benefit from the tourists after reading the speech which follows made by mr air spencer of the union pacific at a commercial club banquet held at cedar city last week it we ve can e even v e n imagine that 11 tourist f frantic does not pay just gladi glanca cp over the things that are being done for cedar city think ot of the hard work the commercial club has dono done to bring about what Is happening over there and we sit alt quietly by and remark that a good live wire commercial club will do no good we just juat wonder how some that have made those remarks will feel eel that is it they care at all but we cannot sit idly by now and think we have got to act we must shake ourselves awake and come to a sense of realization there must be a road road leading over the hill toward Pax owan and it must be built at once even if we have to bond the county and do something that road must go eo through to hook up illg ike a high class boule boulevards varde for the iho tourists that come in cars to get here averso that we can got get part pt of th that at travel ant and we cannot lot let the grass grow under our foot feet thai that Is if we expect to get somewhere the advertising that the union pacific will do will bring thousands to this section yes yea and a great many thousands ands at that they will be headed over the roald leading to cedar breaks and andee we cannot blame anyone for heading them that way and they will be encouraged to return that way over that highway you cannot blame any lioness tor for fighting for her cub we glory in their spunk for doing it but we must get busy and have a road for these people to come over and go through panguitch Pan gultch we have just as much to show them as any gny other town in the world and a good bunch of live wires it if they will got get in and pull together all the travel will not go over over the U P and they will not all ride in the V U P auto hacks they will como come this way it if there is any preparation made for them to come but it we sit alt by and suck our thumbs we will be passed up like a pay train passes up tip a tramp it will take action and quick action at that so defor the news puts it up to people ot of this locality to get busy and organize a real commercial club and do so quickly get busy and get a connecting road with the one leading into cedar city and on to california read just what mr D S spencer ot the U P has to say and you will not wonder at those people ordering two hundred tons of tee ice from a P pan an aitch firm but if t we dont got busy and do something the effects we will feet feel will chill us worse than two million tons of ice fee mr air chairman and president macfarlane it is I 1 who has baa pleasure in being here 1 I bring you greetings brorn president gray vice president adams mr bassinger Bas mr air amos and others it is probably unno cesary to state the ahe net fact that in southern ut bah ah there Is a district now comparatively unknown surpassing alf all others in the united states in scenic beauty and cedar city 6 national advertising campaign total the afie total expenditure therefore of the union pacific system in the development of this scenic region in prop preparation for the 1926 1925 summer tourist season Is loS with respect to the improvements improvement 8 at bryco bryce canyon the lodge center constructed of stone logs and sawed timber so harmonizes with its surroundings surround inga a total of guests with respect to the district in general to properly make known and advertise the attractions ot of this section and the accommodation a provided the union pacific system will ex expend erid during the coming year approximately tho the or of which will include newspaper and magazine advertising booklets leaflets anil and lectures with slides and moving pictures the alio statistics of oc other national parks show that less than thirty per cent of oe the visitors travel by rail for example while il persons visited yellowstone national park during the 1924 season or 72 percent per cent cont traveled by means other than an rail mil principally in private conveyances hy v vey ances while or 28 per cent traveled by rail notwithstanding that this same condition will undoubtedly prevail in this now southern ern utah district the union pacific system will in connection with its undertaking to develop this district provide accommodations accommodate ions not only for persona traveling by rail but for tho the comfort and necessities of probably pi more than three times time as many who will travel otherwise the construction of the facilities referred to and the inauguration of tho the service by the union pacific as set forth above has been somewhat delayed pending improvements of the highways connecting cedar city with zion natrona Na Nat tlona lonaI park cedar breaks and bryce canyon honce the very great necessity tor for tho the vigorous prosecution of the work of completing the public highways between the points named to the end that so far as aa it Is possible travel over them may be made safe and comfortable not only for those who will patronize the auto stage service to be operated by tho the union pacific system but tor for the much greater number who will travel in private conveyances A splendid example of a completed highway la Is the highway through red canyon on the route from cedar city to bryce canyon completed during the year 1924 by the forest service the federal gov government emment through its dureau bureau of public roads forest service and national park service the state of utah also several counties thereof interested in this project have during the past two years responded well to the necessities of the situation and have been building and improving the highways but the work Is far from complete it la Is felt however that with tho the improvements already accomplished those abose now in progress pro iress sarand and those promised the early part of next year a uto auto stages may bo be operated between cedar city and zion national park also between cedar city and bryce canyon during the summer of 1925 with reasonable safety it great carp care ls Is exercised there are four classes of highways ln involved voled state Naf national lonal forest national I 1 park and federal aid highways highway I 1 it Is expected that the completion of the highways in this district necessary to complete the system will be carried on the same forceful man nor that characterized tho the work 0 the several agencies interested thore in during tho the year 1924 avid and this expectation pec poe tation is what alint has caused tho union pacific to feel that it is justified in beginning operations in the bummer of oc 1925 on the alio largo large scale indicated only the lie beginning of the development of tho the district la Is indicated herein the tourist travel including that by private conveyance will wo we aro are most confident grow to huge proportions depending almost entirely upon the completion and the proper maintenance to nance of a first class system of highways when these highways are completed and provided they tire ire thereafter kept in proper condition the travel will increase very rapidly making necessary the expansion of 0 tho the lodges hotels motor transport service and other oilier facilities to care for the business this the union pacific system is prepared to do as rapidly as the condition of the highways and the business will justify in conclusion tho the news will thank alie t U P for the citizens of this community as every dollar spent at bryco bryce will assist us to a certain extent 3 the advertising they will do Is bound to bring people to this section when people come they spend money they make friends with us we I 1 get 9 et acquainted with tho the world we have a chance to see what aie IQ other fellow ellow Is 18 like it will enhance tho the value of our property and will do a wonderful thing tor for the young folks folka that aro are growing up and that Is what we have got to take into consideration wo we actually believe that tho scenic business of this section will outdo the sheep and cattle industry so ao tar far that be no comparison father and mother will come coma to see bryco bryce their children will come and their children too and there will always bo be a crowd to see bryce canyon the most n 08 t beautiful spot in the universe and an open road twelve months during the year via parowan carowan Pa rowan la is the only road in spite of all other roads that are built or will be built and Pan gultch will then and not till then stand on an equal tooting footing with any town in the state of utah |
