Show Bill Glasmann wabbles a good deal at times, but sometimes he gets in dead center and then he knocks the black out for sure. We have often wondered at the present cordial relations between be-tween the first presidency aDd the Tribune, but have never been able to make anything out ot the grotesque conjunction till Bill, in the paragraph reproduced below, gives us the explanation. explan-ation. It is perfectly radiant. The judge furnishes the aevilment, he is the bad member of the firm and it is the saintly Pat who does the godly part of the business, who consults with the first presidency and ascartains what its wishes may be, when it becomes be-comes necessary to tqueeze the wicked Times a bit. But here's the paragraph para-graph and our readers may cipher it out for themselves : Judge Goodwin trying to break bread with the first presidency is a eight worth tl e admission, but the first presidency pres-idency must noi forget that Pat Lan nan has a string on the judge. Columbus Colum-bus could not discover America until some one furnished a ship. The Salt Lake chamber of commerce com-merce strongly protests agalnet the proposition to tax mortgages, alleging alleg-ing that euch 'provision in our constitution consti-tution will have a tendency to drive foreign capital from Utah. This ia one of those things which have two sides And a good argument may be made on both or either Bide. We incline to the opinion that the proposition will hold Vater, on the ground that all taxation 1 ' should be equal. Valuable property in mortgages should not be exempt hen valuable church property and hospitals are taxed. The soundness of the argument that such tax would decreaee the chances of borrowing and put up the rates on money, cannot be disputed. The Argus of last week published a 'pictur" of the Ancient Mariner of the Wabash R. W. Thompson, secretary of the navy under Hayes The likeneeB of the dear, old sun-browned, ague-shaken ague-shaken reminiscence, recalls the eainted memories which cluster about the saintly administration which was all pure save the faulty title, the days when even the mildest wines of California Cali-fornia were tabooed at the presidential presi-dential board, and the navy secretary was compelled to cany a flask of erog in his pocket whenever he went to dine with the president and Mre. Hayes. We can satisfy the Nation's curiosity. curi-osity. TTe write a good deal on the Tribune, it is true, but, then the Tribune Tri-bune ia about the only republican paper pa-per in Utah that one need Bay anything any-thing of. It is mean, wrongheaded and ruthless, but it is able. There's no denying that. Now if the Nation ever got in any one's way, some of the papers would .be sure to jump on it. They don't, and the inference 13 rather more than plain. The New Star should remain no longer on the fence in the woman suffrage suf-frage matter. Our gentle sisters are moving wild-eyed upon their male enemies, and every true man is required re-quired to meet the onset. It matters little which side the fence he gets down on. It is cowardly to refuse to take sides on such a proposition. For which flag is the slogan? The war between the Tribune and Bill Glasmann is a singular one, but up to this good moment the said Bill has had it all his own way. There doesn't seem to be a great deal in it, but what there is beloncs unquestionably unquestion-ably to B. Glasmann, Esq. The Trib. ha3 a good clutch on Charley Crane, we'don't deny it, but Bill has the best hold. Delegate Corfman of Utah county got in a good resolution Saturday. It is to the effect that the capital shall not be removed save by a majority vote of the whole people. That favors Proyo. A vast majority ot the people of Utah ara in favor of moving the capital to this city. They dare not submit it to this vote. There may be those fortunate enough to have the leisure to cipher out the political bias or platform of the Salt Lake Argus, but The Dispatch Dis-patch is not of the fortunate few. The Deseret News, Saturday moved its telegraph matter to the fifth page. It is not an improvement, if it is to be permanent. .F riday evening even-ing countered on the center of the Herald's shield in a workmanlike manner. man-ner. Score one for the cause of justice. The supreme court of Utah decided Saturday that Ihiede must hang. |
