A CAroni-ab's CAroni-ab's San Diego special says : This afternoon af-ternoon Deputy U. S. Marshals Hred- love, Webb. Wilson and Grether en-i en-i tered a saloon and attempted tj arrest j eleven sailors, of the cruiser "Charleston," "Charles-ton," who bad overstayed the shore leave. As Marshal Bredlove arrested me. the others surrounded him and prevented him taking the sailor. The deputies drew clubs and a free fight ensued.- The strwts became crowded with sailors and citizens, and the fight became general. The patrol wagon, arriving with reinforcements, arrested the sailor and he w as taken to jail; but when the patrol left, the crowd again attacked the officers with pick bandies, gas pipes and other weapons. Officer Grplher drew a nistol as the crowd was clamoring for bis life. Another constable con-stable drove up in . a buggy and took Grether away just in lime, for the crowd bad grown desperate. desper-ate. The other officers finally got away and the wounded were picked up. Roliert Brown, sailor, died in a few minutes from the effects of a blow on the head. Another 6ailor uamed Burns is dying', with a fractured skull. Deputies Bredlove and Grether are badly bruised and a number of other persons injured. The community is greatly excited, and the sympathy seems to 1 witt, V.is sailr.-rs. Threats j .ot )yn.ching are made against the dep- ' uties if the sailors can get their bands on them. It is said 'the. deputies, for the sake of a reward offered for deserters, de-serters, undertook to arrest the sailors, sail-ors, w hose shore leave has not expired. Wilson, Bredlove and Grether have dis-appeaied. dis-appeaied. Wat rants have been issued for all deputies concerned. The Report Denied. New York, July 14.
