Show FIZZ! BANG! BOOM! The Arrangements Made Last Night for the Celebration. Committees Report and Money Appropriated Appropri-ated to Properly Prepare the Several Part3of the Procession. The committees on the Fourth of July celebration met in the Courthouse last night. The meeting was called to order by Judge Jones." W. II. Brown reported having visited visi-ted the business houses about taking part in the celebration. They were not all willing to take part in the cele-bralin, cele-bralin, but would attend the meeting. Mr. Drown also reported having waited on tin- Citv Council and had been success! suc-cess! i:l in obtaining $100 to help defray the expenses. A vote of thanks was tendered the City Council for their liberality. : A c inmunication from W. II. King j was read, in which he declined the place allotted him on the program, on account of ill healtlL The- resignation ; was accepted and A. D. Gash appointed to till that place." W. II. Brown stakd that the Opera House land had accepted au offer to plav at Tintic lor $125, so that it would be useless to count on that organization for an thing. The question of fireworks was discussed dis-cussed for some time. W. II. Brown stated that a creditable display of fireworks could not be had for less than $150, and a Fourth of July celebration was not a success without fircwoiks and a martial band. Mrs. Annie Atkins moved that fireworks fire-works be dispensed with, as a display could not be had for less than $200. Judge Jones was in favor of a good displa of fireworks. W. il. Brown: I don't believe in going down iti my pocket $30 or $40 to burn up and let anyone else look at it. I have met with very little success. Only one of the business men I called on has turned out to-night. I would rather have my boys stay at home than let them see I have so little patriotism. American Fork, Springville and all the other settlements are getting ahead of us. Rov. Jeffreys considered it would damage Provo $5,000 not to have a celebration. cele-bration. He was in favor of a good time. Mis. Atkins made a stirring appeal in regard to enthusiasm being worked up among the business men. W. If. Brown was opposed to a poor display, and wanted a grand time if anything at all was done. Miss Swarthout thought that the business men would not respond any better than they had done if it was not decided to-night as to what was going to be done. The motion to have, fireworks was then put and carried. John A. Brown moved that the chair be requested to instruct the finance committee that they must obtain $250 for li i e works. Carried. W. H. Brown moved that $50 be appropriated ap-propriated to the committee on decoration, decora-tion, and that $25 be appropriated to the programme committee. Carried. W. 11. Brown moved that the com-mittei; com-mittei; on music be instructed to hire the Enterprise, Peay and martial bands, and that $75 be appropriated to that committee. J. J i. Walton was appointed to fill the v;.cancy of F. F. Bee on the corn-mi corn-mi tte on music. W. H. Brown moved that $05 be placed in the hands of the chairman of the three committees on chariots, for putting them up. Carried. Rev. Jeffreys moved that a committee of two be appointed on printing. Carried. Car-ried. Rev. Jeffreys and Dr. Hannberirwere appo.nted by the chair to act as the committee. Wiiliam Riley moved that two more be at' led to the committee on finance to raj ie $500 to defray expenses. Me srs. Riley and" Havercamp were appointed on that committee. Mrs. Atkins reported having selected Miss Annie Hines as "Justice," and Miss Lena Bachman as "Peace." Beifc Thurman and S. L. Ohipman were Appointed to visit the business men and the manufacturers m regard to dis jlays in the procession. Tin; meeting adjourned until to-morn to-morn w at 8 o'clock. |
