Show OUR CITY DADS. They Appropriate $100 to Help Celebrate the 4th. The Mayor Authorized to Segot Jafe a Loan of 83,000 to Help the City in Its Temporary Strait. The City Council met in adjourned session last night. Mayor Booth was in the chair. W. II. Brown, in behalf of thf committee com-mittee on the Fourth of July celebration, celebra-tion, asked for an appropriation from the city to help defray the expenses of hiring music. . Mr. Maiben moved that the petition be not granted. Mr. Dixon stated that it would be a good thing if the city could legally help this laudable inOve; but in their straightened circumstances it was a hard matter for the city to appropriate any money. .Mr. lJunn: I think it is the duty of every officer to help in this matter, and I move that $100 be appropriated to help ! defray the expenses. Mr. Maiben i I only made the motion so as to haVe something to talk alout. I am as much in favor of it as any one, but I do not want to see an appropriation appro-priation made if it is to ? be expended in fireworks. I therefore withdraw my motion. The motion for the appropriation, was then put and carried. ( Smith & Filt, Rawlings & Gray, and Julian Riley applied for retail liquor dealers' licenses, all of which were granted. The mayor presented a verbal petition asking that help be given Aaron Dug-dale, Dug-dale, an indigent person. Referred to the committee on quarantine; The City Treasurer") by the Mayor, asked that one of two thi ngs be done by the Council, either furnish the money to meet the warrants, or stop issuing them, as the tre tsury was $3,000 belli nil. Mr. Maiben moved that the Mayor be authorized to botrdW $2,000 for three months. Carried. A communication from Henry Stagg was presented in which. he tendered his resignation as sealer of weights and measures for Frovo citv, as he was not a citizen of the United States. The petitioner recommended Joseph Faucett as his successor. Mr. Dixon moved that th.e resignation resigna-tion be accepted and Mr. Faucett be appointed his successor. Mi. Henrichsen amended by striking out the name of Joseph Faucett and inserting that of T. R. Sundberg.- Mr. Maiben I shall oppose the amendment on account of Mr: Surid-berg Surid-berg being employed . by tUe Sun Foundry Company," and consequently is not his own master. Tlie Chief of Fire Department submitted the following report: To 1he City Council of Prow City: Gentlemen I herewith submit my report as chief of Hie department, for quarter ending June 8, 1891. There have btjen four fires during the quarter, located as follows) torwit: ne oil Eleventh street, between I and J streets; estimated loss, $750; supposed sup-posed to be incendiary. One on Fourteenth street, between X and O streets; cause, street motor. One on Fourteenth street between M and N streitS; cause, street motor. One on second street, between I and J streets; supposed to be ir.cendiarv; loss, $5,000; insurance, $4,700. Total loss for the quarter, $-5 900. there are now enrolled twenty -even volunteer firemen. The apparatus' is in good condition with the exception of the hose cart, which is very much worn . I would respectfully recommend for your consideration the following to-wit to-wit ! J. Maiben, Chairman. The hearing of petitions for remittances remit-tances and abatement of taxes was then taken up. Tne following persons appeared and made complaint that their taxes were too high: Mr. Baum. Wm. Harrison, (in behalf of his daughters, Mary and Ettie Harrison), John Kuhn, Wm. Nelson, Nel-son, Charles A. Smith, John Craven, James Bonnett, Charles Anderberg, Andrew An-drew Anderberg, Mr. Bigelow, Moroni Bigelow, Elizabeth Brown and Thomas Cochrane. The following applied for an abatement abate-ment of taxes on account of inability to pay them ; Leo Bigelow, an invalidIda K. Knudson nd Sarah Clark. Dr. Simmons appeared in belr If of the Nat ional Bank of Commerce, and stated the objection to the tax was that it was assessed on a prospective capital, it being assessed for $50,000 while only $25,000 had been paid up. C. II. Bloomsterberg appeared and wanted to know how if was that 'after selling about one-third of his property since last year his assessment was higher. high-er. He could not understand how it could be higher unless he had been assessed as-sessed for the roses on his place. The Mayor: Mr. Bloomsterberg, when the assessor goes around he is not supposed to know a rose from a" manure pile, and he is supposed to assess all proiKTty. Thi3 tax is not a sentiment, it is an actual fact. After having the extra tax of one mill explained, the petitioner departed, ' saying, "Well, that settles it." Mr. Maiben moved that further consideration con-sideration of the tax remittances be laid over for one week. Mayor Booth stated that he had received re-ceived invitations from Ogden and Lo- i gan for the council to attend the celebrations cele-brations at those places in a body. On motion of Mr. Dunn, the recorder was instructed to communicate wifh those cities and express the regrets of the council at their inability to attend on account of our own celebration. On motion of Mr. Li ldiard, the council adjourned. |
