Show An li:ipirtiuit D''l-ion. I Sr. Pai l, July .'!(). A Fierre. S. D. special to the I'ioneer-I'r-'i's says: Con- :iiderable comment lias been aroused J by the decision of the United States court in regard to the status of the children born of Indian yvoman and white or citizen husband. The case yvns that of the United States Yeter-nary Yeter-nary Surgeon Ward, on a charge of selling liquor to a half breed. The evidence ev-idence was that ihe half-breed in question ques-tion had a negro father, who was a citizen. and an Indian mother. The decisi.m of the court is that the children follow the status of their father, and hence are citizens of the United States and amenable only to its laws. If the decision holds good it will all'cct the ownership of the greatest great-est part of the lands taken up in the vicinity vi-cinity of Fort Pierre and Starley across the river from Pierre, as it is nearly all held by squaw men's children or their wives. |
