Show A SOAPY ORATOR. Messrs. Whitecotton and Hol-ituooK Hol-ituooK gave the I'ayson people a talk Wednesday night, and every one of us who have listened to Republican orators ora-tors could, though we might not have been in attendance, guess pretty closely as to the tenor of the talk and the lines or argument, u, uidn t the Liberals catch it. Whitecotton informed his hearers that the man was a fool or a liar Republicans are noted for gentlemanly gentle-manly expressions of confidence when he said that there was any mutual understanding un-derstanding or harmony between the Republicans and the Liberals. He did admit, however, that the Liberals were Republicans, but diil not have honesty enough about them to come out like men and acknowledge it. Whitecotton would hardly be a good missionary to send out to obtain recruits re-cruits from the Liberal party, but of course he would not prefer dishonest men to compose any part of the Eepub- lican party. England caught ,'thunder, and I cannot understand why Republican Repub-lican speakers have such a venomous spite against that country unless it is for the fact that England is outstripping I all the European high tariff countries 'in manufactures, in commerce, in (wages, in making money, and in gen-j gen-j eral prosperity. Then as an illustra-j illustra-j tion what England would do under free , trade and it appears that the protect-j protect-j ed countries of Europe would not be j able to do anything he told about a j soap factory in Chicago, and that soap j institution is sending free soap to Salt j Lake City to soap their argu-jment argu-jment Hat they are not selling free soap to soap the Salt Lakers j but are giving Salt Lake free soap, to the end that the soap makers in Salt Lake may find it a loosing business to make soap in opposition to free soap. Then he told us that the soap men of Salt Lake sav to the Chicago soap men just send along your free soap and soap us wi h free soap, but our American Ameri-can grit will carry us through free soap and we will make a living any way free soap or no free soap. I am really sorry that Mr. WniTE-cotton WniTE-cotton wound up the soap story in the manner he did. j He had so much-soap that lie slipped into a difficulty but lie slipped out again yet not explaining the consistency consis-tency of his argument on soap. The Republican speakers talk free trade. They say the Democrats want free tarde but it was left to Mc Wii itecotton to make the best free trade argument file people'Vf Payson have listened to in many a da'. Send along your free soap. We h;ive American grit and I guess we can stand it, never thinking that an out and out free trader talks just in that way. Send along your soap, and not only soap, but if you have any other kind ot soaj), not soap, send it along, and if by our American grit, we cannot send as much soap to you as we are receiving, then put us down c.s mistaken mis-taken in our judgment of ourselves. It is claimed by the free trader that such a course would stimulate business to an extent never felt under the restraining restrain-ing influence of protection. Mb.. IIoldbrook followed in about the same strain, but used the soap in a different manner in its application. The gentlemen had a bad night owing to the rain. The gathering was not very numerous, especially when we consider the Democratic representation. representa-tion. Qui nimium prohat nihil prtthat. Yet. |
