The Police Obliged to Wage a War of Interference In-terference -The Militia Galled Oat ' Other Strikes and Troublas are Reported Report-ed Bomb Throwers Arrested. Cleveland, Ohio, May 2 The disorders dis-orders which began yesterday with the May Day demonstration of the unemployed unem-ployed culminated today in open riots. There were three separate and bloody canflictB between the police and the rioters, and tonight the troops are under un-der arms ready to respond to a call in case of any emergency. A mob of about 2,000 started to raid the factories on the flatB and drive from work the men employed therein. there-in. The windows of the Variety Iron works were smashed by stones and bricks and the workmen fled in a panic. A force of seventy-five policemen waa then called out, The rioters proceeded, however, to the Upson Bolt works, where 1.500 men were induced to quit work. In the south end of the city a mob of 500 men drove away the workmen from the United States salt works, and A ere about to.make another raid. They tfere met by a squad of ten policemen, who clubed them until they were glad to run. CALL FOR MILITIA. St. Paul, May 2. Governor Nelson received a call from the sheriff of St. Louis county for the militia to help suppress the disorder reported among the strikers on the Meaaba range. NEARLY AN EXPLOSION. Mount Pleasant, Pa., May 2 Bombs to blow up Plant "A" of the Comellsville Coke company were put in place today. The dynamiters were caught at their work and arrested. TO FORCE MEN OUT. St. Louis, May 2. Belleville miners today marched upon 1,000 Glen Carbon miners and prevailed on them not to work. Efforts are being made to force out men at Edwardsville, Mt. Olive, Clyde and Gillespie. TO AID THE MOVEMENT.. Pana, Ilia., May 2. Three hundred and seventy-seven miners turned out at a mass meeting today and voted to go on a strike indefinitely in aid of the national movement. WILL AFFECT FOUB THOUSAND. Ottdmwa, Iowa, May 2. The state miners' convention was held at Albia today. Four thousand miners were represented by delegates from Marion , Wapell, Polk, Boone. Appanose, Mahaska Ma-haska and Keokuk counties. The delegates del-egates stated in advance that a strike would be ordered. It will affect 4,000 men. "WILL GO OUT TODAY. St. Louis, May 2. From information informa-tion at hand late tonight, it is prob able that 1,200 of the Mount Olive, Staunton and Fort Edwardsville and Glen Carbon, 111., miners will go out tomorrow. |
