It lodged under the epiglottis and Avas drawn down into the trechea. A violent fit of coughing failed to dislodge the obstruction, obstruc-tion, and three physicians were called in. All they could discover was that the cork was not in the windpipe and that it was probably lodged in the left bronchus. Dr. Bothwell suffered very much all Saturday night, but conducted his Sunday services, preaching with great difficulty. On Monday he had a relapse and on the following day mechanical means were used to dislodge the cork. The patient was laid over a bar and pounded vigorously on the back, but to no purpose. He was very much exhausted ex-hausted and on Thursday he was taken to the city hospital, where John D. Rushmore performed the operation known as tracheotomy. His windpipe was probed with various instruments, but the cork remained in the bronchus. These operations were begun at 3:30 p. m., and it was not until 5:30 p. m. that Dr. Bothwell recovered from the effects of the operation. Tie was so weak that be could not speak. He wrote -with a pencil on a sheet of paper: "I know that my Redeemer is near me. lam resigned to His will. Tell my friends.". Since that time the patient has been sinking gradually. Dr. Bothwell was called to the Church of the Covenant only a few months ago, but he has become very popular. He was formerly president of the Straight University, in Louisiana. |
