The guidance and counseling function during the academic year is similar to that of the summer Program. However, the emphasis of the program shifts from orientation procedures to other areas Such as; the development of an adequate selfconcept, the improvement of skills, adjustments to college life, planning for the future. and assuming responsibilities. The Pre-Professional Program is designed for low-income disadvantaged minority students who wish to pursue medical careers. Students selected to enter this program will be high school graduates who have the potential to become successful college students in a premedical curriculum. : Special programs are designed to*provide remedial support, instructional assistance, academic stimulation and counseling (academic, personal and group) for those selected to participate. ae) Ce ~ Lee » te ame mf {pierneti 2 9 The Study Center Program A Study Center. housed in the Developmental Learning Center (DLC) on campus, is in operation Monday through Thursday of each week. All freshmen Project students are required to attend the Study Center a minimum of six hours per week. | Professional and peer tutors are employed in the Study Center to assist students. Study Center tutorial schedules. are prepared indicating all subjects available to the tutees as well as the time of day they are available and the tutor’s names. ye" afternoon phases. Academic Year Program | The academic year program (39 weeks) is designed to continue the efforts of the concentrated summer orientation program. The overall objectives of the Pre-Professional Program are as follows: 1. To identify inner-city high school students who could profit from a college educatron but who are presently not admissible to the Unversity of Detroit for either financial or academic reasons, or both. . To provide academic. financial and counseling support to Pre-Professional Program students to help facilitate the attainment of their educational and occupational goals. 3. To provide enrichment experiences in areas related to the medical profession. 4. To assist students in securing places in medical schools. tv oa Ri» pegs BF: See tH ede eee” ete ar Stasis The Pre-Professional Program consists of a full day summer program and a ten month academic year program. : Summer Orientation Program The summer program will be of six-week duration. Classes will meet on a five-day per week basis. The day will be divided into morning and Developmental Learning Center Students admitted to Project One Hundred take a battery of diagnostic and achievement tests. The purpose of these tests.is to better enable the counselors to advise. and assist in the students’ scheduling. In addition to testing, subjective information, resulting from personal interviews serves to facilitate academic counseling and academic scheduling. Students who are in need of intensive academic assistance and remedial instruction are scheduled into a Individualized Learning Program (ILP), whereby they enroll in special laboratory classes or academic developmental courses. This oc- curence is a direct result from diagnostic and achievement testing. 7 The DLC houses reading, mathematics and writing laboratories, which provide the following services: a. diagnosing the academic deficiencies of the student. b. prescribing the method of academic assistance that will best meet the needs of the student. based on the test results. ¢. providing for an on-going evaluative process that will measure the students performance. Post tests are given to evaluate the progress of students enrolled in the DLC laboratories. Students who show need for additional assistance are scheduled into remedial and developmental 7 classes. Financial Aid Program | Financial aid is based on financial need. Once the need is determined. a combination or package of different types of aid is designed to meet the students requirements. Each student receives a financial aid package based on the family in| come. Financial aid packages are awarded each year ae for 4 years.
