Show The Broad Ax» September 1975 The Trio Program at Oklahoma Page 11 Baptist University is a coordinated effort to reach disadvantaged students at all age levels. serving students through three different projects sometimes proves to be a harrowing experience for Trio Program staff: Dr. Paul D. Travis, Director; Waymon Special Services Counselor/Upward Grimes, Counselor/ Manager; Bill Bound Manager; Barnett, Gary Cook, Talent Search Coordinator: Pat Porter, Administrative Assistant; Judy Basham, Trio Tutoring Director: and Ricki Robertson, _ Office Manager. The Upward Bound project specializes in services to the high-school aged student. Offered through Upward Bound is a unique seminar-based program running parallel with the regular University summer school period. Students live in dorms and get a taste.of real college life. Activities are planned and organized on a continuing basis so that students are at most times involved in some aspect of the program. Students are required to complete 12 seminars during the summer. Seminars are offered in art, drama, science, English, math,etc. Seminars are a week in duration and scheduled so that Accumulated class time is five hours. The seminar concept is a new development in the Upward Bound Program and is proving highly successful. Students choose their own seminars and are responsible to themselves for attendance. Students who are organized into Phase | are juniors in high school, Phase II are seniors in high school, and Bridge who are college freshmen the following fall. Special Services, ASSIST, is designed to meet the needs of the college age disadvantaged who _ have academic potential. Members include the physically handicapped as well as those from low economic backgrounds. Some qualify for the program through other personal circumstances which affect their college experiences. The purpose of ASSIST is to provide supportive programs which will help insure student achievement. Tutoring assistance and counseling services are two supportive components offered year- round to members. Some of these individuals did not have Opportunities to finish high school: other s. desire to further attending high school educations by post-secondary institutions. The |
