Attitudes, basic reading and test_taking skills, and writing skills are important for success in college, but they do not by themselves guarantee success. In the fourth seminar Enrique Mendoza, Assistant Director and Jackie Cheatham, Admissions Counselor, gave an in-depth description of strategies for planning and selecting classes. As students followed along with their printed handouts, Mr. Mendoza and Ms. Cheatham requirements and general the defined explained the academic options available for fulfilling lower and upper division require- ments. In terms of getting one’s personal finances together, Mr. Penn implored students to budget their money wisely, establishing priorites and starting a checking expense account as a means of record keeping and as a future requriement for credit. The only pessimistic note in Mr Penns’s presentation was his prognosis for financial aid. Because more middle income students are eligible for aid and are applying, this means less money for low income students. Also, more accountability in terms of documentation of proff of need is being required-hence, more red tape.
