Show Page 2 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Thanksgiving Trivia Into all the 'World 1. Thanksgiving Day is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States. 2. Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October in Canada. 3. By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, initially known as the Puritans, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. 4. The drink that the Pilgrims brought with them in the Mayflower was beer. 5. The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. 6. The Pilgrim leader, Governor William Bradford, had organized the first Thanksgiving feast in the year 1621 and invited the neighboring Wampanoag Indians also to the feast. 7. The first Thanksgiving feast was held in the presence of around ninety Wampanoag Indians and the Wampanoag chief, Massasoit, was also invited. 8. The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. 9. President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. 10. Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. 11. President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and stimulate the economy of the state. 12. Benjamin Franklin wanted the national bird to be a turkey. 13. The annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920's. 14. The North American holiday season (generally the Christmas shopping season in the U.S.) traditionally begins when Thanksgiving ends, on "Black Friday" (the day after Thanksgiving); this tradition has held forth since at least the 1930s. 15. More than 40 million green bean casseroles are served on Thanksgiving. 16. Turkeys were one of the first animals in the Americas to be domesticated. 17. Wild turkeys, while technically the same species as domesticated turkeys, have a very different taste from farm-raised turkeys. Almost all of the meat is "dark" (even the breasts) with a more intense turkey flavor. Older heritage breeds also differ in flavor. Elder Jordan K Caldwell is serving in the Calgary, Canada Mission.
