The first program was presented by Gunnison Valley Middle School and Centerfield American Legion Post 105. Legion Post Commander, Darwin Jensen, welcomed the students and the community to the program. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by middle school student Macady Anderson. The GVMS band, directed by Mr. Patrick Summerhays, played a patriotic song. Student Body President Lynzee Bartholomew then introduced this year's featured speaker, Miss Utah Christina Lowe. Lowe gave a presentation on civic involvement and being a good citizen. She incorporated several movie clips which helped make her presentation entertaining and educational. She finished the program with a stirring rendition of God Bless America and the singing of the thought provoking song, The House I Live In. Principal Alan Peterson, a Vietnam Veteran, then introduced the veterans in attendance. The program ended with a video presentation titled America the Beautiful. The next program was put on by Gunnison Valley High School and American Legion Post 104. Principal Kent Larson welcomed students and veterans and then turned the program over to the National Guard for the flag ceremony. Guardsman Roger Peterson conducted the flag ceremony and led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Legion Captain Boyd Donaldson of- fered a prayer followed by Legion Commander Mark Pickett's introduction of the veterans. Miss Utah, Christina Lowe, was also the featured speaker at the GVHS program. Lowe was introduced by Le- gion Auxiliary member Mandi Bartholomew. Lowe gave a similar presentation at the high school. Following her singing of God Bless America, the high school students gave her a standing ovation. Following the program, the Legion Auxiliary members held their annual raffle drawing. The raffle is held each year to raise money so the Auxiliary can send local girls to Girls State. This year's grand prize winner of the quilt was Carolee Andersen Jensen. Bulldog junior forward Sara Nilsson earned 2A first team all-state honors from the Deseret News, while sophomore goalkeeper BrieAnn Peterson and freshman midfielder Paula Ferracini earned honorable mention kudos from the D-News. Nilsson led the Bulldogs with a school record 28 goalsthird most in 2A and seventh overall statewide. Opposing teams focus on Nilsson and often double team her with their best defenders, but she uses her arsenal of speed and skills to find space and score. She now has a total of 55 goals in her three seasons in Bulldog Blue, also a school record. Peterson had two shutouts during the season, and made some huge saves during the Bulldog's 1-0 upset of Liahona Academy in the first round of the playoffs. Peterson's play earned praise from her own teammates and coaches, as well as from opposing teams and their fans. If I'd had a vote, I'd have put her on the first team- she's the best keeper I saw all year. Ferracini had a fine freshman year with 8 goals, and Sara Nilsson BrieAnn Peterson Paula Ferrcaini also contributed a lot of assists. She surprised opponents with her playmaking skills, teaming with Nilsson to create a dangerous scoring combo up front. Congratulations to Sara, BrieAnn, and Paula, and to the rest of the Lady Bulldogs on a great season. I'm already looking forward to next year. Santa Claus is coming to town! Santa Claus is coming to Gunnison Valley again very soon! He is loading up treats for all the good boys and girls and will be here to visit on Friday, November 26th at 11 a.m. He will be coming to a new place to visit this year, and looks forward to hearing from all his young friends at the new Gunnison City Hall. There will be a chance to talk with him and let him see what wonderful children live here in the valley. Everyone remember to bring your letters to Santa, and he will do his best to reply (please include a self addressed, stamped envelope). Remember he is watching and making note of all of you, be certain to be good. See you at the Gunnison City Hall! |
