Show Thursday, October 21, 2010 Schools The Gunnison Valley Gazette There is no reason to fail by KENT LARSEN GVHS Principal It has been a continual process at the high school to figure out times when we could provide additional assistance to students who struggle in their classes. We have attempted before- and afterschool programs with minimal success. With the block schedule we have fewer class exchanges which has created an additional 30 minutes each day. After considering several options we have decided to combine this period with our lunch time. We call it our coop period. The purpose of the co-op period is to provide additional help for students who are receiving low grades (D and below). It also provides a time to make up for absent days due to sickness or school-related activities, and it gives any student an opportunity to improve their grade. A student who misses class due to an athletic contest can actually attend up to three co-op periods before they have those classes again. Through our school man- agement program, Power School, we print off a progress report for all students every Monday morning. Students know how they are doing in all classes. Those who receive a "D" grade or below and/or an "I" know that they are required to attend the co-op period that day. Tuesday through Friday only those students with low grades or an "I" receive a grade report during 2nd period. These students are required to attend the co-op period that day. The teachers are in their rooms and have materials for these students. The rest of the students have the privilege of a 55 minute lunch period. Thus far our experience has been that those students who have attended the co-op period are not failing their classes. The system can work if students will take advantage of the opportunity. If a student will use this time there really would be no excuse to fail a class. Our goal has been to reduce our ineligibility list to less than 5 percent (16 students). A student is not eligible to participate in any school activity if he/she has a cumulative grade point average of less than 2.0 or receives an "F" or "I" grade in the previous quarter. This number has been as high as 60 students in past quarters. The most important goal is to ensure that students are successful and do not fail classes. We invite parents to support this program. One of the problems that we are encountering is that students are content to receive a "D" grade. This is below average, and average should not be acceptable if students want to be prepared for post-high school education or for the job market. We would ask parents to encourage their children to achieve high standards. We have an excellent school with dedicated teachers. We have many students who perform well and are involved in school activities. All students need to leave the school prepared for college or for the work force. The co-op period is just one avenue that can help them get there. Thank you for your continued support.
