Bulldogs exit in second round I ACTION r by MITCH PETERSON The Gunnison High School girls soccer team beat the Liahona Warriors last Tuesday, October 12, in the first round of the 2A state playoffs, but a loss to Millard in the second round last Saturday in Fillmore ended the Bulldog's season . In Orem versus Liahona, Sara Nilsson scored the gamewinner in the 70th minute, while goalkeeper BrieAnn Peterson made a diving save in extra time to preserve the 1-0 Bulldog win. At Fillmore against Millard last Saturday, the secondranked Eagles took advantage of their chances for a 7-1 win. Nilsson had the goal for Gunnison, her 28th of the year, while Peterson made so many great saves I lost count. The upset over Liahona may have been the game of the year. After a scoreless first half, the Gunnison offense started finding some room early in the second, while the Bulldog defense kept halting nearly every Warrior advance. Paula Ferracini and Cristina Mayorga each had shots on goal early in the half, and Nilsson finally broke through with about 10 minutes left in the game. Ferracini had the ball near the left sideline and sent a cross to the middle. Nilsson got to it, dribbled once, then turned and booted it into the net. "I saw their goalkeeper out of the corner of my eye," Nilsson said. "I just hit it past her as hard as I could- and I didn't fall this time." After the match, Nilsson had praise for the team. "The defense was good today," Nilsson said, "and BrieAnn (Peterson) is amazing," Nilsson says she's heard other teams wishing they had a goalie like Peterson. "But they don't," she said. "We have her." Gunnison head coach Jaron Jensen was happy with the win. "It's always great to win in the playoffs," Jensen said. "It was a very physical game and we played through it. When we started getting shots that second half, we knew that sooner or later one would have to fall. I could break down the game a hundred ways, but the fact is that they came out, they finished, and they won." The Bulldogs knew they'd have their hands full with Millard on the Eagles' home field. Gunnison played hard, but the Eagles are a playoff tested team and they pulled away for the win, ending the Bulldog's season. "We didn't lose heart all game long," Jensen said. "We made a couple of mistakes, and Millard took advantage of all their opportunities." Millard had a 3-0 lead at halftime and built it to 4-0 early in the second half, but the Bulldogs kept working. In the 52nd minute, Mayorga sent a cross to the middle. The ball bounced off the goalpost, then Nilsson got to it and booted it in to cut the lead to 4-1. Peterson had a fine game in goal, making saves from every angle and shutting down several one-on-one chances. But the Eagle offense added three down the stretch to win it 7-1. It was the last soccer game in Bulldog Blue for senior cocaptains Clara Scharf and Breanna Young. "Those seniors are wonderful," an emotional coach Jensen said after the Millard game. "Breanna and Clara played so hard today. They both had tough assignments and they See SOCCER, Page 7 MI I VIDEO PLUS 178 SOUTH MAIN, GUNNISON 43S-S2E-S204 • NEW RELEASES EVERY TUESDAY! • GIFT CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE (can be used in Gift Shop) • DISC REPAIR • CHECK FOR IN-STORE MOVIE SALE PRICES (Previously Viewed) •FREE MOVIE- • • Bring in this ad and get a FREE General Movie Rental with paid New Release Rental!
