Show Page 2 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Thursday, October 21, 2010 Letters to the editor.. Axtell News by AUDREY BOORE HELP SAVE YOUR POST OFFICE Dear Editor: We all know the United States Postal Service is having a very hard time financially due to the changing times with most of us using the Internet to communicate and to pay our bills. Did you know that legislation in being considered in Congress that would allow the Postal Service to close thousands of post offices that serve rural areas and small towns? A Senate bill (S 3831) would allow post offices to be closed that do not make a profit. It would also eliminate the requirement that the Postal Service consider how closing the post office would impact the community it serves. The current law protects small town and rural post offices because they are vulnerable and serve postal-dependent communities. The House of Representatives is also discussing legislation to create and independent panel to close post offices. This legislation was introduced by Representative Jason Chaffetz. Latest information says the USPS wants to close all Level 15-18 post offices and move them to retail stores. A postal outlet in a retail store can be closed without any public notice or input. Level 15-18 post offices would include Salina, Richfield, Delta, Fillmore, Gunnison, Manti, Ephraim, Mt. Pleasant, Fairview, and Moroni. Most other post offices in Sevier, Millard, and Sanpete counties are small and rural offices and would be closed if Senate bill 3831 passes. What can you do to save your post office? I urge every reader to contact Senator Bob Bennett at (801)851-2525, Senator Orrin Hatch at (435) 586-8435, Representative Rob Bishop at (801)532-3244, Representative Jim Matheson at 1-877-677-9743 (toll free) and Representative Jason Chaffetz at (801) 851-2500 now to oppose actions that could jeopardize our small and rural Post Office. Remember, act now—the Post Office that closes could be in your cornmunity. Sincerely, ArLou Edwards Retired Postmaster Centerfield A belated welcome home to Stan and Linda Jorgensen, who recently returned from a LDS mission at Martin Cove, Wy. Glad to have you home.
