Bulldo s head into play-offs by ANDY HILL On Wednesday the Bulldogs wrapped up their region schedule with a tough loss to the #1 ranked San Juan Broncos in Blanding. It was a game where Gunnison was plagued by turnovers that cost them the early momentum, and eventually the game. "We played lots of younger players in the second half," said Coach Ludvigson, "So that was nice to get them some time and see them on film." With the loss, the Bulldogs finished in 5th place with a 1-4 record in region, which paired them with the 4th place team from the south. After a coin toss took place between three teams who were all tied for third, it was determined that the Kanab Cowboys would hold 4th place, and host one of four opening round playoff games. The opening round game for the Bulldogs looks to be a great match-up. Kanab, who is 2-3 in region and 3-6 overall, has been off and on all year long. Early on they struggled, but have come on as of late. The students at Gunnison Valley Elementary School were treated to a special assembly on Tuesday as part of Red Ribbon Week. The purpose of this assembly was to encourage the students to be drug free and was put on by Utah magician, Mike Hamilton. Hamilton's show is titled "Magic with a Message." Hamilton goes by the stage name Magic Mike and has visited over 150 schools in the last two years promoting his positive message. Magic Mike was named Utah's 2009 Best of State Speciality Act winner. Magic Mike amazed students with such acts as a floating table, a live dove that disappears and reappears, flaming paper that turns into a rose, card tricks and more. Throughout the show Magic Mike held the children's attention and taught them about the dangers of drugs, alcohol and peer pressure. Several times during the assembly he led the students in a cheer, "Too smart to start." Hamilton, who grew up in Ephraim, also stressed over and over again the importance of learning to read and learning to read well. He told of his own struggles as a boy dealing with dyslexia and how challenging it was to learn to read. But through consistent effort, reading at least twenty minutes a day, he was able to become a good reader. He told the students that reading well helps you in most every aspect of life. He then told the students that not all books are good and that kids should choose only good books to read. The assembly was sponsored by the GVES PTA and was a great success. Hamilton's illusions, audience participation and over-all showmanship were fantastic. It was a program that the students will remember for many years to come. They had big wins against South Sevier and Parowan, and nearly beat both Enterprise and Millard. But the Cowboys are young and have been struggling to gain some momentum. Gunnison, much like Kanab, is looking to gain some energy. They have been plagued with injuries and turnovers that have kept them out of most of their region games. But with the season coming to a close, the Bulldogs appear to be back at full strength. "We are excited to have Brogan, Rylan, & Connor back and able to play offense," said Coach Ludvigson. "It is great to have them back. Practice looked a lot different with the guys back." When asked about the match-up on Friday, Ludvigson was very optimistic. "From the coaches that I have talked to, Kanab plays hard for all four quarters, so we need a complete game. But I am excited to see what we can do back at full strength." Kickoff for Friday's game is at 7:00 in Kanab. The game will be broadcast on the radio on KMGR, 102.7 FM.
