Show Sports Page 8 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Thursday, November 5, 2009 Gunnison Valley Swimming Pool Exercise Hours by CARI HANSEN and MELISSA HALL Gunnison Volleyball headed to State this week first facing off against Enterprise who was ranked #1 in their region. The team knew they would be a tough team to beat! “We went out with the intent to play our very best game. The girls worked really well as a team, and we saw a lot of good things in that match,” Coach Hall thought. “The first game showed a lot of nerves, but after getting a feel for the court and the situation, the team went back out in the 2nd and 3rd games with their game faces on and ready to play. Gunnison lost the three matches 8-25, 16-25, and 1625. Rayel Sorensen, Capri Kimball and Kayli Frandsen all had 100% serving. Sara Brown & Kayli Frandsen each had 5 kills and Cami Carlisle had 7 kills and 2 aces. After a short break the team geared up to play North Sevier. Coach Hall felt confident in the Bulldog’s ability to win. “We had played North Sevier a total of four times, preseason and region matches. So we pretty much knew what we were up against. In practice last week, we made a few changes in order to prepare for this match. We tried to prepare the girls mentally and hope they had the confidence in themselves and each other to go out there and work as a team and get themselves a WIN. Unfortunately, I think their nerves got the best of them during this match. For most of these girls, it was the first time they have played in a state tournament so it was a nerve-racking experience for them, and for me!” Although the girls lost the first match 11-25, they Monday-Friday 6 - 9:30 AM Tuesday & Thursday 7 - 8 PM Open Swim 12:30 - 8:00 PM Mon - Sat The First 40 people save 10% at the BODY BARN! Cari Hansen/Gunnison Valley Gazette Kayli Frandsen getting a kill in an earlier match against North Sevier. came back with confidence and ready to play for the second game and beat the Wolves 27-25. “We had a lot of good things happen in that second game. It was a very fun game to be a part of!” Coach Hall exclaimed. The team wasn’t able to come out with the win though, as they lost the third match 14-25. Amberlyn Stratton and Kayli Frandsen both had 100% serving. Kayli Frandsen had 5 kills and Cami Carlisle had 3 kills. Kayli Frandsen had 4 blocks, Sara Brown had 2 and Maddie Powell had 1. “I would like to commend Kayli Frandsen on her performance throughout the state tournament matches. Kayli has been so consistent throughout the whole season, and it was no different on Thursday. She has a great way of keeping our team positive. She definitely played two great matches for us and it showed in the stats from both.” - Coach Hall Coach Hall is very proud of her team. “I’m very happy with these girls! They are a great group of girls and I love every minute that I get to spend with them, in the gym and out. They have come so far in the last couple of years and have worked so hard to be better. We have really pushed them and made them change so many things about how they play volleyball. For the most part, they have been eager to do what we have expected and I hope that they see the rewards for their hard work. Their reward is getting to see their own improvements; my reward is getting to part of their successes. Playing in the State Tournament, even though they may not feel like they were successful, will only make them better for next year. Being able to see the high level of competition and to be a small part of that competition will benefit them next year. Hopefully they learned some valuable lessons just by being there and participating. Next year, we will be there to compete with our game faces on!” 62 South Main Gunnison 528-5955 Offer ends December 31, 2009 Do Your Best Do Your Best is sponsored by: Cub Scouts learn fire safety Peterson Refrigeration and Mechanical 550 South Main, Gunnison • 528-3365 Courtesy Photo/Malory Hermansen Pizza • Calzone Breadsticks • Salad Coach B’s Selling it Yourself?
