Show Opinions Page 2 Just A Thought By MARK HENLINE My wife, Jodi, and I have had this little battle over baking frozen pizzas for years. Jodi puts the pizza in the oven and never sets the timer. She thinks she can sense when the pizza is done by smell or something, and then will just pull it out. This usually works. The problem is, if she gets distracted by a phone call or by a story on Entertainment Tonight or something else, the family ends up with a crunchy pizza. She won’t admit it but this has happened many times over the years. Her complaint on my pizza is that the cheese is never melt- The Gunnison Valley Gazette ed on top. I answer back, “Well, I set the timer and the crust is brown, so what do you want me to do?” She will then always ask me, “Did you preheat the oven?” My answer is always no. I just turn on the oven and put it in for a couple of extra minutes. Jodi will always tells me, “Well, there’s your problem.” This little pizza battle has been going on for years. Every time she asks if I preheated the oven I think, what difference does it make? Then I stubbornly do it my way even though the directions always tell you to preheat the oven. On Sunday evening I had one of those ah-ha moments. The Mormon missionaries, Elder Funes and Elder Noyes, had dropped by our home just about the time I was pulling a pizza out of the oven. They were sitting at our kitchen counter while I sliced it. My wife walked in and said, “You did it again. The cheese isn’t melted.” I answered back, “Well look at the bottom, it’s almost burnt.” Letters to the editor... THANKS TO MR. ALLRED FOR A GREAT CONCERT Dear Editor, Kudos to Jody Allred for writing a symphony for Gunnison! It was great to hear the original work of our local artist at the GVHS Fall Concert on Wednesday. We heard the four stages of the valley’s development in the four movements, as the band, the orchestra and the Snow College Chamber Orchestra combined to perform it. It was a neat opportunity for our music students. What a lot of work Jody went to to help us celebrate our Sesquicentennial. Thanks, Mr. Allred, I appreciated it! Anita Lyons That’s when I heard the words again, “Did you preheat the oven?” Only this time it was Elder Noyes asking it. I looked at him and said, “What difference does it make?” He explained that the heating elements are on the bottom of the oven and if you don’t preheat the oven, it won’t heat evenly and the food will burn on the bottom. I just stood there with my mouth hanging open. After all these years I finally got it. Preheating made perfect sense to me. If I would have listened to my wife and followed the directions on the box I could have saved myself twenty-five years of eating lousy pizza. It makes me wonder how many other things in life I could have been enjoying more if I had just followed directions.
