Show Thursday, June 25, 2009 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Hidden treasure found in Salina by BONNIE NIELSON As I walked into the beautifully restored Presbyterian church on 204 South and 100 East in Salina, I instantly felt a feeling of welcoming. Amazing old photographs smiled back at me and colorful antiques beckoned for me to come closer and learn their stories. The History echoed through the images and statues, and the treasures of Salina’s past came to life. As I sat and talked with ReNonne Robins, the woman who has been the curator and care taker of the charming museum for the past eleven years, I realized that I was in for an afternoon of hospitality and edification. I was moved by her humility at not wanting praise for all of her hard work and love but I was so entirely impressed with the many many selfless hours she and so many others in the community had given to this restoration. From the students of the FFA planting flowers and building a fence to a perfect stranger passing through town stopping to till the earth for the rose bushes to be planted. A community of volunteers had spent countless hours of remodeling, rebuilding and restoring. And as I sat amongst the shadows of the past I was told a story. It was a story of a woman with great passion for life and love of God. Miss Mary McCallum had come to Salina to improve, edify and create educational opportunities for all of Salina’s children. Hers was the very first Kindergarten in the community. And her curriculum consisted of “hefty amounts of Bible study” along with arts and crafts and instruction in music. She loved children and especially her daughter whom she dedicated the chapel to. Miss Mary’s spirit and the beauty of the old building were apparent inside and out. Built with stone brought from Page 5 ACTION VIDEO PLUS 178 SOUTH MAIN, GUNNISON 435-528-5204 COMING ATTRACTIONS FOR JUNE: • REVOLUTIONARY ROAD (6/2) • HE’S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU (6/2) • DEFIANCE (6/2) • GRAN TORINO (6/9) • INKHEART (6/23) • PINK PANTHER) (6/23) • 12 ROUNDS (6/30) the quarry northeast of town, the beauty and charm of the building has withstood many years of Mother Nature and neglect. In 1998 restoration of this amazing building began, 114 years after it opened its doors as a church. They finally opened their doors to the public in 2004. It was said that Miss Mary loved Roses and always had roses planted on the south side of the building. A tradition that is still there today. An unimaginably enchanting rose garden welcomes all who enter with its beauty and scent. Each rose bush was donated and planted in honor and memory of citizens in the community. And every inch of the building and surrounding grounds are literally pieces of Salina’s history. From the rod iron fence to a beautiful pine tree planted out back to a piece of the old Salina High School, to stone pillars that were recycled from the old firehouse in town. Antiques from all over the area are stored with love and care for all to see. An old lace apron used as a curtain hangs in the window garnishing the beautiful old table and stove. And a picturesque monument made to honor World War II vets stands in the doorway emblazoned with all the names of Salina residents who served our country. And in the doorway a sign beside the doorway reads, “To the past, the present and the future, this museum is dedicated. To the past because we came out of it, to the present because we live in it, to the future because our children will inherit it.” I was a bit sad to end my afternoon with Miss Mary and the history she had began so long ago. But I know I can go back and be made welcome and sit at a lovely decorated table with hot chocolate or tea and homemade banana bread and take another journey through Salina’s history. This site, on the State of Utah Register of Historical Places, is your treasure to enjoy and is available for special events.
