The graffiti is too graphic in nature to print in the paper. Representatives from the LDS Church were notified early Monday morning and steps were taken to remove the graffiti. That same evening, road signs between Mayfield and Thursday, June 25, 2008 Efforts are underway to make this year’s Fourth of July Sesquicentennial Celebration one to remember. Committees have worked overtime in planning a long list of fun events and activities. Activities will begin this Sunday evening at 7 p.m. in the Gunnison Stake Center with a patriotic fireside. There will be three speakers this year. Grover Childs will tell the story of his grandfather, Bishop Kearns, the first bishop in the valley. Bishop Kearns’ boy was one of the first killed in the Blackhawk War. Chief Blackhawk would later personally apologize to Bishop Kearns. RaeLou Olsen will speak on the early days of Mayfield when the town was divided into two sections, The Order and New London. There will also be a speaker talking about the history of Dover and the experience early Church President Wilford Woodruff had in Fayette. The next events will take place Friday July 3rd at the high school. All of the events on the 3rd will be at the high school this year. The evening’s activities will begin at 4 p.m. with a performance by the Inouye Institute for the Creative Arts. The annual roast beef dinner will follow at 5:30. Cost for the dinner is $7 per person ages 12 and up, $5 for children under 12 or $30 per family, up to six people. The auction will begin at 7 with the proceeds going to the community sesquicentennial project. Please bring any items to the high school before 5:30 p.m. on the 3rd or contact Lori Nay at 528-7136 or Gunnison City Hall at 528-7969 to arrange for pick up. The next two events will be held at the football field and will require a ticket. First will be Axtell’s own Sean Nielson performing his high-flying, freestyle motocross tricks. Sean is on the professional Dew Tour and has been competing in competitions around the country. If you’ve never seen Sean jump, you owe it to yourself to come out to the show. Discount tickets can be purchased for $8 for adults and $4 for children if they are purchased before the day of the show. They are available at Gunnison City Hall, Valley Furniture, Ace Hardware, Gunnison Valley Bank and Burns Saddlery. The evening will end with a fire- the ordinary that might help police catch these criminals. To help in the effort, the Gunnison Businessman’s Association is offering a $500 reward and Gunnison City is offering a $250 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved. Saturday the 4th will begin with the annual American Legion breakfast from 6 to 9 a.m. at the Gunnison Park. The legion serves all you can eat pancakes, ham and eggs for $5 per person or $15 per family. The flag raising ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. at the big flag pole in the park. The parade promises to be the biggest 4th of July parade ever seen in Gunnison Valley. It will begin with a fly-over by four F-16 fighter jets from the 466 Fighter Squadron out of Hill Air Force Base. The jets are scheduled to fly over Main Street from north to south, at 300 knots, at 9:15. After the parade, the activities at the park will include carnival games, concessions, a volleyball tournament, book sale, giant slide, bounce house, food, free swimming, a diaper derby, and races. Also, a reminder to enter the beard growing contest which starts this week. Go to Gunnison City Hall on or after June 24. Show them your clean-shaven face and register for the contest. The judging of the contest will take place on July 24th at the Mayfield celebration. Bring the whole family and enjoy this special Sesquicentennial 4th of July celebration.
